OK, folks. Catty has never burned anything to disk, but last week my hard drive crashed, and Catty has finally learned the benefits of backing up. Red Face Went and bought some CD-RW disks, but I have no idea how to use them. Can WinXP burn disks, or do I have to buy extra software?

I do have an external disk burner, but have never used it.

All help very much appreciated.

Catty,
Xp can indeed burn CD's. All you have to do is right click an object, and in the menu that opens , go to "Send to", then the cdrw drive, and click it. A window will open, then all you have to do is look at the top left side of the window for the words " Write these files to CD", and follow the prompts from then on. Good luck, post back with any other questions.

Thank you, Chris. I'm not sure what you mean by "object," is that a file, an image or whatever?

I'm using IE. When I click on "Send to" there is nothing about the D drive. However, there is an option for "zipped-compressed." Is this the D drive?

On the left there's an option to "copy the file," and it actually did start to copy, but stopped and asked that I insert a disk into the D drive. I did that, but the message returned. It appears that IE is not recognizing my D drive. Do I have to do something to the CD-WR disks before trying to burn them?

Well, apparently my Compaq does not have a CD-RW drive, so I guess I'm up the creek.

I sure do hope my Toshiba does.

Does anyone know if it's possible to take the present drive out and install a CD-RW drive?

Catty,
By object, I mean any file, song, folder, etc. The Zip compressed is not the D drive, I'm afraid. It doesnt seem like you do have a CDRW drive, but they're relatively cheap at Walmart if you have someone who can install it for you. I would say your D drive is being recognized, but it appears your CD is not. If its a high speed CD, and a lower speed drive, it wont see it. Some CD's will state on them or on the package that they go up to 24x, or 56 x, and if your drive only sees them up to 6x or 8x, it wont show up.
Do you have anyone who can replace the CD drive with a CDRW?

Thank you, Chris, that answers a lot of my questions. I don't know how to tell what the speed of my drive is, nor even the disks, as I have taken them back and exchanged them for a 2G flash drive, and even that didn't hold all my data.

I am learning something from you, and I do appreciate it.

Flash drives are better and easier than CD's in my opinion anyway, Smile. You can always get another flash drive, with a bigger capacity, I've seen them up to 8 gigs so far.
