Can anyone help me with this speed problem please? I'm using Win98SE on a P2 with IE6. Up til recently I was running at 1200 - 1500kbps and now I'm running at about 30kbps!
I have checked through the other replies and cleared out my files and done a defrag and virus scan and Spybot, PC Pitstop says my system is generally healthy and suggested I did some bandwidth tweaks? (I haven't done that yet, because I don't know how???)Problem is there are so many suggestions on here and I'm not so computer savvy that I don't exactly know what's relevant to me. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks again everyone!

My first guess is that the speed decrease is due to spyware. These nasty little programs often run in the background of your system and rob you of the system performance. Some can be very difficult to remove.

In addition to the Spybots, I suggest you run the Ad-Aware from Lavasoft Ad-Aware and once that is complete, run the SpywareBlaster. SpywareBlaster

Be sure to run the updates after installation to get the latest detection files.

This site offers some instructional tips about using these programs. Ok, Teach Me

Also, try this link to check for browser parasites: Check for parasites

Finally, you can use the "Hijack This" utility program to ferret out really persistent spyware. Be sure to use this in conjunction with any of the Help Forum sites shown on the home page: Hijack This

If, after all this you don't see an increase in speed, then I would suggest you look into the speed tips by tweaking with your bandwidth.

I hope something here helps!

To resolve the error message, you can get the Microsoft file MSVBVM60.DLL from Microsoft.com. This link will direct you to the download:

MSVBM60.DLL

After downloading the file, just open it and it will install itself. This should allow the installation of the two programs.

I hope this helps!

If you were to ask my wife, she'd probably say that I sleep too much! I work at night doing computer work for an all cargo airline. During lull times I often get to this forum. And during the daytime, I work on client's computers. Often while awaiting downloads or scans, I can use their system to visit the forum. This also gives me the opportunity to show the clients how to use this site to get answers to their questions.

I hope those downloads will solve the speed slow down problem.

Lol! Big Grin
Yes thankyou, much better now. We're running at around 600kbps, as oppose to 30 odd.
Always appreciate your sound advice, you've never been wrong yet, and that you put it in such a way that I can follow what to do!
Hopefully not, but probably I'll be back for more!
Til next time.......
