we are having something weird on the old computer.

you use start, choose shut down, it gets to the screen where it says windows is shutting down, and sits there.
nothing happens.
we end up having to use the reset button.
ctr alt del dosent do anything.

whats going on? how can we fix that?
it only happens some of the time, and usually after hitting the restart button you can run shut down just fine.
this is on win98.

thanks

I had the same problem some time back.
I found there were too many start up programs running. I am using Win98SE..

Go to:
Start
Programs
Acessories
System Tools
System Information
Tools
System Configuration Utility
Startup

Uncheck everything but:
Taskbar
Scan Registry
Task Monitor
System Tray
Load Power Profile
Run
And anything that has to do with your Antivirus program.

This did the trick for me.

There are at leat 25 "fixes" offered on both official Microsoft sites and forums such as this. Find the fix for your computer is the trick. For my laptop is was as simple and shutting off the Windows sound scheme. Reason? The sounds become corrupt, and hang your computer when the closing sound tries to initiate.

MattLynda, right-click My Computer and click Properties. If the text reads "Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition", install the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement.

I suggest you also install the Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package which resolves a separate shutdown problem.
