This happens randomly. My tech says I need an external fan at the tune of $60, but I wonder if there is another way to address this. Today it got so hot I couldn't connect. Not even on my desktop, both were down.
Any help appreciated.

catty, For the time being until you get the heat issue solved, I would take an oscillating fan that sits on a table, and aim it at the open side of your computer to keep it cooler. An extra fan installed to vent the heat out of the computer would definitely be a help, but I dont see paying 60 bucks for one.

Thanks, Chris. Your idea was so good that I went to eBay and found a small fan made to clip to...whatever, and you can point it where you want, like a snakelight. It is new in the package, under $10.

$60 for a Case Fan! Cheek! I got an external case fan for Just $6! As regards Processor Fans Check out this Page They average $7 (and you are paying wholesale prices) The Uprated versions c/w Heatsink are $30 Max Chris Mentioned Directing a House Fan through the Open side panel ...Very Good idea ! Especially on these hot days (a lot of computers struggle in the Heat, even with "good" fans ) I have an oscillating Tower fan On Standby

Catty The Heatsink is Probably choked with dust Thats the Big alloy element Behind the Fan, covering the Processor, and the Tech guy has not cleared the Muck Out properly! Its acting as an Insulator Worth Asking the tech guy to reseat it with Some special Heatsink paste, cleaning it out and Fit a Cheap fan or a New Fan & Heatsink

That's a great idea, bedstor, I didn't even know there was such a thing. But my tech charged me $60 just to tell me there was nothing wrong with my computer, so...a couple more of those and I'll learn to fix it myself.

Thanks to both of you. I am really wondering, though, what causes my PC to run hot intermittently? It's never that hot in my house.
Cathy, is your pc to close of a wall? Did you move it lately or change place, if so make sure the fan is at least 8 to 10 inches away ( or more) from any walls or it might heat up.

Mozart, my PC is not near any wall. It does sit on a wooden lap desk I had made for me. I have now propped it up at the back with a piece of molding under it toward the back, and that seems to have helped a lot.
Thanks so much for your help.

Perhaps living "Under the Volcano" has something to do with it.
(Sorry. I just couldn't pass that up.)
Catty, I don't use my AC, and it gets over 90° in my house almost every day in the summer. (Old brick house, Windows so out of square that most won't open) I bought an $8 fan at Big Lots, and keep it blowing on the computer grill work. As said above, just make sure you have plenty of ventilation around the unit, whether desktop or laptop.
LOL, it just might, Dorian! Haven't had any eruptions lately, but we're all keeping an eye on Mt. Rainier. If that one goes, we'll all be running for the ocean as there is no higher ground in the state.
My fan should be arriving any day now.
