I have an e-machine with XP Home. I have 2 recovery CDs and no installation CD. Somehow I lost some dlls. System file checker tells me the dlls are missing but cannot tell me which ones. It is asking for a installation CD. I don't have it.
E-machine tells me that that is the way they sell the PC. They talked me through some routines - no joy.

They suggested I download the Microsoft Recovery Console.
That sounds beyond me. Anyone have any suggestions?
Is this the new way to sell PCs?
Did anyone experience this?
Thank you MKS

emkayess,
Depending on how many DLL files you need, you can go here to find most any of them. I've found alot that I needed on this site. Sorry I cant help on the recovery disk issue, I havent had any dealings with E-machines.

Thanks for the link vansrme - I am bookmarking the page. But - first I need to know the name of what is missing. I have no clue how to do that and the computer is not saying. Any ideas?

Try this:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type in

sfc /scannow

4. Click OK

Windows will run the System File Check utility program. If any Windows system files are found to be missing or corrupted, you will be prompted to restore the file.

The system files are normally stored on the C:\ drive at

C:\i386

I believe you'll be informed of any missing system files. If you're asked to put in your Windows installation CD click OK and direct it to C:\i386 to find the backup files.

I hope this will help!

Thank you, Dwight, but there is no place to enter any re-direct.
My choices are: "retry", "more info" and "cancel".
Any more ideas?
My computer runs so-so OK.
I let sfc run for a while and canceled each instance of asking for a dll. I quit after 20+.
So how come it is still working?
Thanks for your help!

I don't know what you mean by "I let sfc run for a while and canceled each instance of asking for a dll".

I assume the SFC is telling you that a .DLL (Dynamic Link Library) file is missing.

About DLL files

And what do you mean by "...there is no place to enter any re-direct."

Hi, Dwight,
sorry, I'm not explaining correctly.
When I run sfc starts, then stops and asks for the installation CD. The box has three buttons: retry, more info, and cancel. That's it.
More info just explains what dlls are.
When I cancel sfc runs for a bit and then repeats the same routine. I don't know where I would type in any redirect.
Thank for your help. MKS

It sounds like the "SourcePath" is set incorrectly in your Emachine's registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

In this key, the "SourcePath" should be set to

C:\

if the i386 folder is at

c:\i386

I'm writing this at a ComPaq Windows XP machine, and the SourcePath for this one is set correctly. I'll check my son's Emachine WinXP setup and see if it is set incorrectly too (as it appears yours is).

I can send you a registry patch that you can install by double clicking the file. Would you go to my profile and send me an email so that I have your address to send it too? I'll need some additional system information from you, but I'll ask for specifics via email.

Dwight, I have a question. I don't have an e-machine, I have a pc, win xp home, and when I follow your registry directions, I find that my sourcepath says,
C:\program files\conexant\setup
My i386 file is located in
c:\windows\driver cache.
Is that how it should be?

I ask because I also ran the sfc scannow just to see what would happen, and I, too, was repeatedly asked to install the cd, which was already in place, however, I kept clicking, "retry" until the scan was complete, and when it was there was no log, no summary of the scan, so I'm not sure what it did. While the scan was running, and the prompt came up to tell me to install the cd, the message was something along the lines of, " the cd is needed to copy dll files, or words to that affect.
p.s. my file system is NTSF..if that makes any difference.
In the registry, under windows NT, the sourcePath ( following the same directions for Windows) is D:\ I don't know if that means anything or not.

Each computer manufacturer sets the path for the hard drive installed i386 folder. In my son's Emachines WinXP the pathway is:

C:\Windows\i386

So in his registry the "sourcepath" is

C:\windows

In the case of a supplied Windows XP installation CD, the sourcepath should reflect the CD-ROM drive. LVLF, I assume that your CD-ROM drive is your D:\ drive.

I have read several tech support notes on the SFC in WinXP where people are complaining about the way this works. Several have said they have to click the "Retry" button several times, but that the files are eventually installed. I have only run the one on my son's computer and it seems to be working correctly. The sourcepath setting has to be the correct pathway to the stored backup files, either on the CD or on the hard drive.

It seems to me that the sourcepath value you mention is not right, but there could be a program file in the

C:\program files\conexant\setup

that needs this pathway. You could contact the computer maker and ask about this. Also, their Website may have some information about this under doing system repairs.

I hope something here helps!

Thank you, Dwight, I'll check it out, and post what I find in case other users have the same question.
