Hello! Smile I am having a problem with a floppy disk. The computer won't read it. I'm lucky if it even opens it so I can see what's on the disk. I'm not having a problem with my others, except on one...the computer won't open one picture on that disk. I don't know what's wrong. Any ideas?

It is likely the disk itself is damaged. If possible you should copy the disk's contents over to your hard drive, then save it to another disk.

I've had the best luck with doing this in Windows Explorer, moving one file (or folder) at a time.

Right click "My Computer" and choose explore. In the left pane view, select your floppy disk drive A:\

Try dragging the files over to a folder in your C:\ drive.

I hope this hopes!

Hello, Dwight! Smile
I wish I could tell you that what you said to try helped...but, I can't. It will bring it up to where I can see the files on the disk, after a few minutes, but, it won't open them and it won't move them or copy them to anywhere.
It's weird how I saved stuff to the disk without a problem...
Thank you for your reply, though! Smile

If possible you might try to open/copy the files on a different computer. I've had success doing that on occasion.

If the data on the disks is very important, it is possible to have a "data recovery" service restore the disk. This can be fairly expensive, but if the data is critical, perhaps you would like to look into that option.

Here are some links

Hi Trinity, following on from Dwight`s last post, you may like to try DAVORYyou can download the trial version which lets you recover data up to a max. of 200kb,a tiny ammount I know but if you saved your photos as jpegs you might be in with a chance.

Hi Trinity:
Another trick you could try is going to DOS. I've been able to do this in the past aand retreve data from a floppie that I couldn't from Windows.

If I remember right you have ME, so this may work.

Goto START/PROGRAMS/ MS Dos Prompt
In the DOS Window type
dir a: {press Enter}
This may or may not give you the directory on the floppie.
If not, press "R" to retry a few times. If that still shows an error press "A" abort.

Now try typing copy A:\*.* C: {press enter}
This will try to copy each file on the floppie to drive c:
Again you can press "R" to retry a few times if you get an error.

If you keep getting an error on retry press "F" fail.
This should cause DOS to try and copy the next file on the floppie.
You can go back and fourth with the "R" & "F" untill you've gone through the whole thing or you find it's not going to work.

Close Dos by typing EXIT or click the X in the upper right corner

After trying the above open My computer Then double click "C:"
See if any of the pictures have shown up.

Hope that wasn't too confusing & helps some

PS @ Tom or Dwight:
Check my DOS commands, I think they're correct.

For Windows 98, click Start, point to Programs and click MS-DOS Prompt for a command prompt. For Windows ME, click Start, point to Programs, then Accessories, and click MS-DOS Prommpt.

An important command change: use

XCOPY /S /I /H /K A:\*.* C:\From_A

Xcopy is the improved version of Copy. Here is the intent of the switches used:

/S Copy subdirectories also
/I Assume the target (From_A) is a subdirectory
/H Copy hidden and system files also
/K Keep existing file attributes
