Boy I think I am in big trouble this time. My computer would not reboot so I did F8 and went to reboot there and right away I got this message:Checking file systemD .File is FAT32
One of the disk needs to be checked for consistency.
Windows checkeds disk. Volume serial number is 7E92-2C00.
Files and folders is complte.
Windows is veryfing free space and it seems to be locked in a 62% completed.
What does all this mean, can I just cancel this check and if so how?

i dont havee a possitive answer but when my computer does things i dont like i do a complete format. and if it dont want to format i use killdisk its great. it WILL remove everything from the disk. then a fresh start can be made. thats all i know.
somebody will be along with a better answer im sure. maby just unplug it and wait a minute or two then replug it and start it up again.

I'm in agreement with dodgecity Maybe you've got a "stuck" folder or system file which will refuse to work. But will report "working Ok" despite checks Confused
I get these too.
How to get them right?
Couple of options open to you...
Run a System file check or a error check (chkdsk)on your Hard drive ,just type "chkdsk" in the Start Run box press "OK" it stops at a file click to fix it(I think thats the way? Roll Eyes rusty on it XP does it automatically)
also type "Cleanmgr" in the same box to run the Window Cleanup program .
Alternatively go to www.ccleaner.com download the program run it tick all the boxes less the Cookies,History files on the first check list press "Analyse" then "Run cleaner" after it display the results next click the "Issues" icon..then click the "scan for issues">"Run cleaner" buttons in that order and delete all the findings (finds an awful lot more than the Windows Cleaner) Wink
These are Registry items which are redundant or pointing nowhere (quite safe)
This program frees up a lot of space Wink
I think it might clear the "block"
Your computer will run faster after running this Like a mini Defrag...Though I found if I do a Defrag afterwards, it takes a lot less time than it normally does Does not have to move as much files about.Jobs done for it already Wink

How long are you allowing it to run? I would suggest you give this several hours to determine if it will continue past the 62% area.

Another possible alternative is Steve Gibson's "Spinrite" utility program. You can read about it at http://www.grc.com. This utility can work miracles with bad disks provided the hard disk can be seen at all.

Just a thought have you tried running a defrag?
If you have got any other Operating System than Windows XP you can "see" on a graphical table if there are any bad sector on the Hard drive and normally when it defrags it skips these and continues on the next good location Smile
and they are called loose chains...and they do build up over time and slow down your computer(Not noted in any search link, Only way to try reclaim these is with File cleaner programs Like CrapCleaner (mentioned earlier) or Easycleaner (what I used to use before I discovered CrapCleaner)Easycleaner
