I am using a HP computer, with 63.0 MB of ram and 72% free space, yet I am getting this low disk box that pops up all the time, telling me I need to free up space. I have emptied temp. internet files. It says to free up more space I need to delete some programs. It is an HP that shows up in my system tray. I haven't added any new programs lately, I basically have all the same programs I had but it says my computer is low in disk space. Any ideas on what else I could delete to free up some space without uninstalling more used programs?

Don't delete, back up onto floppy or CD- do you have lots of music? Music tends to eat a lot of space. I made a huge mistake in copying my 500+ files to another folder without deleting the old folder - I ended up eating up nearly all of my hard drive space.

Movies, video clips, all of those tend to take up a lot of space too.

Do you save all of the installation programs you download? I had several which I copied to a cd, then deleted, I opened up nearly 1/4 of my hard drive just by getting the downloaded installation files off the computer. The programs are already there and will not be affected if you remove the installation files.

An example of that would be a downloaded game from say Shockwave, once you have installed the program, the thing that you downloaded has served its purpose and can be removed from your hard drive files. These do seem to take up as much, if not more space than the program itself.

Another, more sneaky place things could be lurking is in DOS.

My Parent-in-laws' 98 computer ( 6 years old now) never was cleaned of stuff. Imagine the speed and storage space retrieved after 6 years of daily internet use!

Wow, I'm suprised they could even run it.

Typical messages when you are close to the limit:
Out of Memory (RAM?)
Out of Resources (Hard Drive Full?)Remedy: Defragging will give some breathing space but If you Drive is more than 90% full,you need to think urgently about making space(ie. Deleting?,New larger Hard Drive? 2nd Drive?)
NOTE: There must always be some space kept empty on the Hard drive allocated to Temp files
Eat into this(If the normal "saved" space is used up?) and your computer Stops functioning (Resources will be 25% or less)
Only way in will be via "Safe Mode"
