If one is forced to reformat what is the procedure? Simply erase the entire C Drive and reload the entire Restore Disk? Can you copy the entire C Drive to the D Drive (second hard drive) and then move your saved files back to the newly retored C Drive? Are there files on the C drive required to access the D driveand would they still function after being moved around?

What Operating System are you using?

Sagus and I have formatted our hard drive quite a few times.

Here is an EDU site with more information.

#1 Save all data/info/pics/games without disks, etc onto diskettes or burn them on the CD's for re-installation after the formatting.

#2 Our Windows 98 has a disk that we use with a formal procedure that actually walks us through the whole process.

Windows has evolved in such a way as to integrate the DOS program into its program, so that the procedure has to be followed or trouble can arise (most people do not have a DOS program to be able install of things go wrong).

Reformatting is not always the best thing to do. Is there a problem with your operating system that is forcing you to do this? You may want to reload your operating system instead. Here is an example of how to do this for Windows 98 Of course your operating system may be different but the Microsoft home page can run you through it. Make sure you create a boot disk before you start!

Ooopps ... running 98SE. I haven't done this in the four years I am running this machine and don't plan on doing this. Just curious since when I added the second hard drive it would not recognize it so had to take it in to the shop. I have the original restore disk and have burned an updated cd of the cab files. Somehow I don't think that is enough to prevent headaches though if I did try this to restore the sound I lost a year ago. Thanks for the links Sherasi and Kwll.
