What exactly is excellerated dial-up?
How do you use it in conjunction with AOL ?
If one does use it with AOL, can a lower price version of AOL be used...?

Don
It appears you buy nothing It is already bundled within the program
Might be called something different?
On the ordinary AOL 9 in the bottom left corner on a window, you'll see the words "AOL TopSpeed" click on this and see if it's enabled on the "browser settings" button on the next page? Roll Eyes and the "Always Compress Graphics" setting is chosen as well?
No more you can do beyond thatConfused
That's as fast as you'll get it,Doubt if a 3rd party program will do any different? Frown
This is an article posted about the latest version of AOL 9 on how it compares against AOL 8 and other browsers in page loads

Don, I was given the option of "accelerated dial-up" with MSN and all it did for me was just the opposite --- it put my puter in slow motion. So I dumped it and told MSN what I thought about it---anything but an enhancement.

Accelerated Dialup with Earthlink seems to work well, and the speed can be adjusted to suit your need. As everyone knows, I am NOT a big fan of AOL, so I avoid it like the plague, LOL. I have had to remove it from too many computers that it had "bollixed up", according to the owners. After removing all traces of AOL, their pc's ran much better , and usually much faster. Depending on which ISP you use, accelerated dialup can be an advantage. It sure has helped me tremendously.

Hi Folks:
Looking into this " Accelerated Dialup"; it seem to me that
they (AOl, Earthlink, Etc) all work basically the same.
They'll grab the requested web page via their Superfast Inmternet connection
, compress it then send the compressed page on to you.
A small Decompression program will then decompress it
on your machine.

Here's a representive site that gives a fairly good explaination
of this.

Hope this helps some

Fritzzs,
Some people dont have any problems with AOL, and have told me that many times, but there are people who bring me computers with AOL on them, and either no, or next to no protection at all,(antivirus, firewall, spyware removers etc.), either. After removing countless viruses, spyware programs, etc., I invariably end up removing AOL too, as the computer is still a mess with it still on there. Now there have been times when AOL hasnt bothered a computer I was working on at all, but very few of them. It may be something that AOL in this area has included in their programs, and it may not, I dont know. I just know that for the people who have me take AOL off their computers, and who then get a different ISP, their computers tend to run more smoothly. I tried AOL myself awhile back, and did not like it at all, as it was too invasive for my tastes, and slowed my computer down dramatically, (I did the same with Norton Anti virus products, removed them for that reason). Granted, that was an older version, but from what I've seen and read since, the newer versions arent much better, at least, not in this area. There are some great quirks associated with AOL, but I'll NEVER have it,lol.

Vanrme: From what I interpet from your reply, those who didn't have any protection where the ones who had a messed up computer..

I have had computers (home and work ) and ALWAYS had protection and like I said , no problems...

So, one could say that AOL is NOT the problem, rather what the owner DIDN'T install for protection... ?

About the only time I had a problem, big, not normal, was when I used Norton or McAffe... AVG works great for me.

What do you mean by "AOL was invasive" ? Just curious....

This was a quote from the previous post I made. The first two sentences explain my meaning of AOLmessing up their computers.

As I said, not all the computers with AOL had problems, but most did, and most of them HAD protections from the nasties out there that required removal of AOL. That being done, everything ran great. I'm glad yours is doing ok, and hope it continues. Good luck!

chris

P.S. As far as being invasive, it had installed files in nearly every corner of my computer, I had to do a search for anything with AOL in the name and delete them all to get rid of it.
