I'm having a problem watching and hearing videos online. I can never get any sound, and sometimes, no picture, though the video says it is playing. Is there any way I can get these into my Windows Media Player and would they play better there?

Thanks for any help.

You may be missing one of the codecs to run...

For a Limited time DivX Inc. Is giving away their DivX Pro bundle which includes the official DivX converter and DivX Pro Codec. These products add multi-processor (SMP) support for faster encoding and decoding with dual CPU.

DIVX HERE

Just follow the instructions.

Hi Catty
Have you Quicktime or Realplayer on your Start menu?

I have My computer set up to automatically choose the Best Program to run The Clip

Better than half the time Real player is chosen then Media player then Quicktime
Only one I don't like using is WinAmp which attracts Spam if you are not cautious Mad
Get rid if you have this Frown

There is no harm in reinstalling all 3 again If you have them They will all return to default settings and overwrite with no Probs

Quicktime Player
http://filehippo.com/download_quicktime_player/

quote:
QuickTime Player from Apple allows the playback of quicktime movies (.mov) and many other formats:
The new QuickTime Player not only delivers startling quality, but it's easier to use than ever. It requires no set up for content that streams over the network. Instead, QuickTime Player automatically determines your system's connection speed and chooses the highest quality stream for the amount of bandwidth you have available. And if you ever lose a connection while watching streaming video, QuickTime Player automatically reconnects.

Realplayer
http://filehippo.com/download_realplayer/

quote:
RealPlayer (renamed from RealOne) allows your system to play Real Media files (.ra .ram)
This new version also allows you to buy and download music that plays on more than 100 portable devices, including the iPod.

RealPlayer is a digital-media player for finding and downloading new music, playing and managing audio and video clips, and taking your digital entertainment with you. RealPlayer offers a streamlined interface that allows you to keep your media library close at hand. Keep all your digital-media clips organized in one place; save CD tracks with one click; pause and rewind live streams; transfer music to CDs and portable devices; and enjoy clear, smooth video playback and multichannel, surround-sound support.

Windows Media Player
http://filehippo.com/download_windows_media_player/

Tip Download Version 10 as its half the size and near Identical to Version 11 Wink
quote:
Windows Media Player is the all-in-one media player that provides the best experience for discovering, playing, and taking your digital entertainment anywhere--on Windows XP-based PCs and the widest choice of portable devices.
The Player provides faster access to top activities, such as ripping, burning, and syncing. You can also fine-tune the layout, choose from a range of online music and video stores and services, and much more

Last tip .... Make sure that Windows Media Player remains the default player and the other 2 are Not set as Default.(they are alllisted as "Enable access to this program" on the Set program access list, and B) the default is set as "Use Current Media player" in the Custom section

Should run smoothly now with No request prompts for file types Smile
PS I upgraded Windows media player from version 7 to 10 the other day and The Windows update downloaded a few security patches Later .Nothing to worry about.Allow them to install.

Thank you, bedstor dear. I don't have either Quicktime or Realplayer, so don't know if setting or resetting the default is necessary.

Also, I don't know how to find the "Enable access to this program" on the Set program access list, and B) the default is set as "Use Current Media player" in the Custom section." You will have to dumb down for me a bit LOL.

I will get the other version of WMP.

You are 99% of the way there Catty

The way in is to click on the Custom ilnk ans you'll see lots of tick boxes So Where it says Custom click on the small button on the same line (Right side) and the window will open Locat the section marked
a defaul media playrt and mark the button which says use my current Media player and click the "enable access" tick box below it if Windows media player is showing? press the OK button to save the setttin

In my opinion Installing Realplayer will help matters if you listen to music and Video clips a lot. Ithink is about a 70/30 split (in favor of Realplayer)if Windows chooses whats the best for to view the Clip or whatever?

Tip NEVER allow a strange Media player to grab access Those I have given you will cope with 98% of all file types Cool

Bedstor, I very seldom play videos and never movies.

We will have to dumb down a little more. Where will I find this "Custom" link?

Thank you.

Open the program window up Can also be found within the Add Remove Programs section of the Control Panel
You'll see 3 Options labelled ftom the Top
Microsoft Windows
Non - Microsoft
Custom

Click on the words to show how they are configured

And Only the Custom section can change the Way things happen in the other 2 sections If you know what I mean?

OK
Open the Start menu

You'll find the circular Set Program Access and Defaults Icon right under the Control Panel Icon
And above the Network Connections Icon Smile

Oh. Part of the problem is I don't have icons, just a list.

I did open Program Access/Defaults and clicked on "Custom," then next, but all that happened is that it closed and brought me back to your message. My computer is MESSED UP BIGTIME!

Sigh. I'm going to save your message and when I figure out what is wrong, I will try it again. Thank you so much.
