My monitor has decided that my eyes are much better than they were. My screen size has gotten smaller. I have a black border around whatever site I go on. I know how to enlarge text, but the task bar and tool bars are too small to see without getting close to the screen. However, tonight, after a re-boot (My computer freezes a lot, and I have to turn it off and hold the button in for about 6 seconds. Then it starts up again.), Everything was absolutely perfect, better than I can ever remember*, with one exception - my hearts game wouldn't open. I was told that there was no graphics devise recognized. I can live with that, although I'd like to have the game back. But after another freeze-up and re-start, things went back to how they were...small. (At least my hearts game is back.)

HP Pavilion a1510y, Mozilla, old Samtron monitor, 75E

*Even when I went to edit in Pictures, using Paint, everything was bigger, even at the same pixel size. Editing was much easier that way.

If the graphic card fails there is a biult in 128 MB integrated graphics whch should be sufficient for your Heart game and Viewing the Web with a lot of the Graphics turned off
But the Symptoms also sound like the Monitor is out of adjustment .
If you can get the On screen menu displaying

Is there asetting called default or Factory Settinr or even Restore/Reset ...something along those lines and a setting of 1024 x 768 (32 colors) on your desktop Properties > Settings should be a good starting point with most Computers

As for drivers, the driver of either of the Fitted type of Graphic card is a universal type www.filehippo.com/software/drivers/holds both of these

Either ATI Catalyst or NVIDIA Forceware are the brands you'll have inside

Ok When you said Old Monitor you weren't joking
I have a Driver for your Monitor (Have to be Old to use them ) from 2000 www.monitor-drivers.com/drivers/6/6610.htm
If you are Using XP you may have to alter it in the Properties
(Need Dwights advice on this)
Try it? It may improve matters?

Question does the Picture stretch out fully as Windows is Booting up? Before the Desktop is Opened? If the answer is Yes the Graphic card is Faulty! It only kicks in as the Desktop is opened
PS Is yours one of those Motitor that Clicks when Changing resolutions?

Help for us. Have you got CCleaner installed ?
If yes, at the Top of the Program Page It shows the Processor type/RAM and the Graphic card fitted on Mine it says NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT www.ccleaner.com

Sorry. I forgot to tell you I have Vista Basic. The screen size seems to be the same when starting.

2 silly sounding questions Can you move the
mouse pointer into the black border area and does it still show?
And my second is..does the Screen have text overlapping itself at the End of a line?

2a) Has the Visible Picture have an equal border all around?

Reason I ask is trying to find out if it is a Software Issue or a convergence controls issue

As you have not stated you have a Color issue too, which if uncorrectable means the Tube is on its last legs

Last 2 part question... If you shut down the computer after use, is the Border still showing on the warm monitor?
Or switch on the Monitor ONLY! Give it a minute or 2 to warmup Can you see the Border now?(DO NOT start the Computer OK??)

2a) Has the Visible Picture have an equal border all around? Yes, but that is oly true if you count the Task Bar and Tool Bar as part of the image,

One thing that may help is if you will do a "Print Screen" and then post a reduced size picture here (or email one to me).

http://www.dwightblackburn.com/prntscrn.htm This page explains the procedure.

Also, check to see what screen resolution values are set in the screen personalization window. Here are the steps:

.PDF file

I hope something here will help!
