I've moved this computer from one room to another. It still works fine, save for one thing. There's no sound from the (inbuilt) speaker. Clicking on the speaker icon at bottom right of the screen shows that the mute is not on and the volume is set at its highest. The machine is running Windows XP with AOL 9.0.

What may have happened and what's the cure?

Since the problem occurred after moving the hardware, surely a loose or disconnected cable is the culprit, though it might be inside. Re-check every connection. If you can open the case, find the speaker (a circular structure just inside the case, maybe 2 or 3 inches in diameter) and see if both wires are securely connected.

If you think the system settings somehow got changed, try going to Control Panel, then open Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the Volume tab and then click the Advanced button, which opens a Master Volume control window. The PC Speaker should appear as one of the devices. See if it has been turned down or muted -- regardless of the master volume setting.

If the internal speaker has been turned off you will get No Bleep on start up? Is this right?

Try this
quote:
In order to adjust the volume of the internal speaker, you will need to access the Sound and Audio Devices control panel:

1)Click Start, Control Panel.
2)Click on Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices then Adjust the system volume or double-click on Sounds and Audio Devices.
3)Adjust the volume as needed. To completely mute the speaker, place a check-mark next to Mute.

OK I'll try there and come back if the problem isn't resolved. Thanks.

I guess Fred must have solved the problem as he never came back. Fred, are you there? Did you solve the problem? If so, how? I'm having the same problem, and trying to solve it through the "advanced" tab didn't work.

Thanks for any help.

Catty.....it is a bit embarrassing.......I forgot about it for a while but then needed the sound. So, I went to a British version of AP, answerbank.co.uk, and asked their readers. First answer: " you may have a defective sound card"
Second answer: " you may have accidentally muted the sound when loading a program or doing some other action"
Third answer: " have you checked to see whether the wire from the sound card to the monitor is still connected ?"

Have a guess which answer was correct Roll Eyes

I never knew there was such a wire. The socket on the monitor is very tiny and inconspicuous.Once I'd sorted out all the spaghetti of wires and had a good look at the back of the computer and the monitor, I could see there was no such wire connected.Problem solved!

Belated and embarrassed thanks to all on AP who tried to help Cool

Thank you, Fred. I can just barely hear my sound but everything is at max. Mine is a laptop, the desktop sound is fine. I don't think I'm ready to take the laptop apart, but I know someone who is.

It seems to me that Professor's first sentence just about covered the situation.

Good point, Fred. I wouldn't have known what was wrong either.

This is a good time for me to repeat the method that has worked (fairly) well over the years when dealing with electronic equipment. I simply use the PUSH Theory.

Pick
Up
Shake
Hard

I admit that the theory is difficult to apply to larger TVs, but with smaller pieces of equipment, it works surprisingly often, and has the benefit of making the Shaker feel better.

For larger devices there's always the time-honored sledge hammer method. (Hard drive backup highly recommended.) It's a deeply satisfying user experience and helps insure that your system gets entirely updated. Wink

Tired of your hard drive? Here's an option.

Fred, did the loose cable connector have a light green color?

Yup, when I found it in the house it had neat little light green rings at each end Big Grin And guess what? When , encouraged by this find,I went hunting around the back of the monitor, the tiny jack plug socket on the back of that had a light green mark on it and on the computer there was a socket that had a light green ring ! Big Grin Big Grin

Damn clever these Chinese Americans !

My Dad did that in the in 60's with a "Dead" B/W TV power still on! Roll Eyes
Result Massive Bang and a Blue Flash ! Eek
My "expertise" in those days was I could adjust the Horizontal /vertical Hold Controls also the Brightness
My Mom and Dad could turn it on and off ,and Change channels(Only had 2 to choose from in the early 60's)Any adjustment was .."Michael will do it when he get in from school"
I was only 8
Note
The house was so old the TV was wired directly to the Fuse panel (No Fuse!!) Eek Never saw a proper socket in a House where we lived until the Mid 60's
Even had a TV go on Fire in that house! Eek
