Windows 98

I have had this computer since 1998 and it has always worked fine. We just moved and our new Internet server is Qwest DSL.

When I turn on my computer the screen says CMOS settings wrong. Press F2 to load default values and continue. It just sits there until I press F2 and then it proceeds normally.

I am getting a security notice quite often that asks me if I want to continue.

The date and clock reverts to January 4, 1980(Why 1980?) , 12:00 am everytime I restart the computer.

What is CMOS and how do I fix the settings?

Are the other two problems connected to the CMOS problem?

Are you familiar with the battery that is installed in the computer case? My first suggestion would be to replace the battery and see if that is the problem.

This page should help with the specific details and explanations.

If this procedure doesn't solve the problem, please post again and include the make/model name of your computer.

Well, my husband decided to buy a new computer rather than fix the old one. He came home with an emachine W3507 multimedia. I think he probably should have bought a home office version, but what is done is done. The problem is that I saved some files from the old machine on floppy disks (A drive) and this new computer evidently doesn't have an A drive.

Any ideas on what to do?

Could I have my son download these files to his computer and email them to me?

Obvliously we are not very computer literate so it has to be a simple solution. Roll Eyes

Yes, you could have him download the files to his computer. You can have him put the disks on a USB flash drive too, that way you won't flood your mailbox. They hold lots of stuff and fit in your pocket. The flash drive is about $20 at Walmart, and it fits in a peripheral slot in the back of your computer, like where you'd plug in a mouse. I plan on doing the same with my old computer, it's just that I haven't really had a lot of free time lately. I have a lot of music on my old computer and lots of info on floppies. I want to transfer it all before the floppy disk is completely obsolete. Roll Eyes
