My computer running 24/7 refuses to go to sleep, or on standby, or whatever you call it. I've never seen the current screensaver. Everything in control panel/display looks ok - beyond the obvious, what could be causing this?
Catty ********************************************************** 06-30-03, 11:11 AM Georgia85 When you went to control panel did you check out the Power Option Properties under the Screen Saver tab? You should see a button that reads "power". Click on that and you'll get a pop up box with 4 tabs. The first will say "Power Schemes". Check to see what power scheme is selected (always on) and check to see what the settings are. The first will be "Turn off monitor" and it is possible that somehow "never" was selected. These are just some things to check out. I'm not as good as Dwight but figured I'd offer what I could while you wait for him to respond! Big Grin ********************************************************** 06-30-03, 11:30 AM cattywampus I believe you've done it, Georgia Girl. It was set to "system hibernates: never." I set it and am sure that will solve the problem.
Thank you so much - no need to wait for Dwight!
Catty Big Grin ********************************************************** 07-01-03, 08:15 PM cattywampus Alas, Georgia, I have been watching this thing all day and no good. Was I supposed to reboot after applying that setting?
Catty Frown ********************************************************** 07-02-03, 08:09 AM Georgia85 Sorry Catty...I tried to respond to you last night but right when I hit "Post Now" Answerpool seemed to freeze up! Frown I never could get back to this site last night.
Anyways, what I was trying to post was this: Have you checked your screen saver to see that it is working? When you got to Control Panel>Display>Screen Saver there is a button to click to "Preview" Click that and see what happens (make sure your screen saver isn't set to "none"). And double check the time you have set in the "wait" box.
If all else fails, re-boot. I have never had to before but it won't hurt to try? Let me know what happens! ********************************************************** 07-02-03, 11:24 PM cattywampus Tried that, Georgia Girl, even rebooted but that didn't help, either. Sigh.
Dwiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!
Catty Confused Frown Red Face ********************************************************** 07-03-03, 12:40 AM Dwight Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 306676: The Computer Cannot Enter Standby or Hibernate If a Direct3D-Based Screen Saver Is Running
If the 3D Flowerbox, 3D Flying Objects, 3D Pipes, 3D Text, or another Direct3D-based screen saver is running in Windows XP, the computer may not be able to enter standby or hibernation by using the timer in Power Management properties.
The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Dwight ********************************************************** 07-03-03, 02:09 AM Dwight Try the screen saver suggestion above first, but if that doesn't resolve this, it is possible the BIOS (basic input/output system) setting for Power Management is either turned off, or is not working correctly.
I know that you recently upgraded your system from Windows ME to Windows XP. With many systems, that upgrade requires an upgrade to the BIOS as well. To determine if your system needs a BIOS upgrade, we'll need the exact Make and Model of your computer.
Or you can go to your computer manufacturer's Website and check for BIOS upgrades necessitated by the upgrade to Windows XP. About the BIOS - Webopedia
Note: look in your computer's manual or at your computer manufacturer's Website for the procedure to enter the BIOS setup for your machine.
Dwight ********************************************************** 07-03-03, 09:54 AM cattywampus Wow, thank you Dwight, and my dear sonnet as well. I will follow your instructions immediately, as soon as I have breakfast.
Thanks again, guys.

catty Cool ********************************************************** 07-03-03, 11:55 PM cattywampus An inspired suggestion, Dwight, but I'm not running any of those.
Thanks, Big Guy.
Catty Wink ********************************************************** 07-04-03, 05:35 AM Dwight I assume by "...I'm not running any of those" you're referring to the 3D screen savers.
I guess it is now time to look into the BIOS situation.
Dwight ********************************************************** 07-04-03, 09:04 AM cattywampus I agree. Thanks, Dwight.
Catty Cool ********************************************************** 07-04-03, 08:12 PM cattywampus Well, friends, somebody had the right answer, don't know who, but something worked. I'm getting hibernation again!
Thanks to all who helped - good wishes to all of you.
Catty
