First, I hope I'm posting this in the right place, I didn't know where else to put it.

Anyway, I seem to be having a little trouble with a certain program called Virtual Dub. It will not allow me to extract the audio off two video files. It keeps saying that i need Microsoft Audio Codec. Now i went to the microsoft website and searched to no avail to find this codec. Not only that, but i searched all over the net. Please, someone tell me where i can find this codec and download it.

codec:
Short for compressor/decompressor, a codec is any technology for compressing and decompressing data. definition from Webopedia

You might check the Microsoft Windows Update site. Click on Start/Programs and go to the Microsoft Windows Update link. Click that and it will open the update service.

Or click here (Windows Update)

If you haven't been to the update site previously, you will need to allow the scan engine install (click "Yes" to allow the installation).

I suggest you install all the critical updates, plus any of the others you may desire.

If you see an update to DirectX, I suggest you download that as well. If you don't see a DirectX download, you can get it here. (latest is DirectX 9.0a)

You can check to see what version of DirectX you're currently running by clicking Start/Run
then type
dxdiag
Click OK

This is a diagnostic tool. You can check to see if it shows any of your multimedia files as "problem" files, and you can run the video and audio tests. If errors are found, you can use the "Help" troubleshooters for assistance.

If all this doesn't help, can you post the specified codec that you need? Does your program give you any specifics, other than Microsoft codecs? Please tell us your Windows Operating System version information also.

Codec information/downloads I suggest you use this site as a last resort, since it is quite complicated, though very thorough.

I hope something here will help!

To install the Microsoft Audio codec, open the Add New Hardware tool in the Control Panel. Click Next until you see either (1) a list of devices; or (2) Windows offers to search for hardware.

In the case of (1) -- If the codec is listed, click the item, Next, and Finish. Otherwise, choose No...isn't in the list" and proceed as case (2).

In the case of (2) -- Choose "...select hardware from a list" and click Next. Select Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. Under Manufacturers, choose Microsoft Audio Codecs; under Models, choose ADPCM Codec. Continue the installation (you may need your Windows CD).

If Virtual Dub is still missing the correct codec, repeat the procedure and choose IMA ADPCM Codec.

Still not working? Try installing Windows Media Codecs 8 and Codecs 9.

What, not working yet? Sigh ... Third-party codecs, then. Try the latest Codecs from Divx.com.
