i'm experiencing strange problems with my keyboard. It is USB attched to my laptop

When I want to type any of the following

q a 1 on the left nothing appears so I resort to typing these letters on the laptop, i.e. I'm typing with two keyboards right now.

Any ides would be appreciated I'm certain I must hve hit key without knowing??

Very annoying problem.

Ah, so I'm not the only one to use a "loose" keyboard USB'd to a laptop. I haven't had your problem though, Mrs M.

Did you install your keyboard's software? I was advised not to, as it might disable the built-in keyboard on the laptop. I just connected it and let the USB setup recognise it.

If you did install the software, you could try unplugging the keyboard and removing the software. Then just plug it back in without formally installing it.

Or, since those keys are close together, perhaps you've spilt coffee over them and they simply need cleaning!

I used to be an airline pilot. My airline had a lot of trouble from a highly corrosive liquid of some sort that was being spilt over the centre console in their flight decks (between the two pilots). Extensive investigation finally revealed that the highly corrosive liquid was coffee.

I loved your reply. I have a little coincidence for you I used to be an Air Traffic Controller who took very early retirement one year past December and have loved every minute.

Yes I know what you say about the keyboard set up. I simply plugged it in and XP did the set up using the wizard. However, I've cleaned it out and still no joy - so this afternoon I went out and purchased a cable free which I can also use with my desktop and it is an excellent keyboard. I'm only using my laptop as a temporary measure till my desktop is returned. It is currently being diagnosed as I have very severe problems, we think hardware related.

Did you do the transatlantic route, incidentally?

Strictly short haul, Mrs M - and I retired a bit early 18 years ago.

Lord, that makes me feel old!

You didn't make it clear if the new cable has done the trick. I hope it has. If not, I'm afraid I'll have to leave it to someone cleverer than me to suggest answers.

oh sorry - yes all is now well once more, thanks for your suggestions and for trying to help.

I did love my job - but have to say I'm happy to be clear of all the hassle now!
