It all started so innocently!

I received a security bulletin from MS recommending an IE6 patch.

Went to the site. Downloaded.

The installation hung so I eventually aborted it.

I re-tried to install.

The download site thinks IE6 is already installed, and will not re-install.

The download site does not recognize that the
installation failed.

I emailed Microsoft. The Support Tech there told me to reinstall IE6, and gave me detailed instructions.

I followed them. When I ran IE6setup, it DID NOT display the installation's progress, as the Tech had said it would. Instead a message flashed past too quickly to read, and the default (windows) screen appeared.

I repeated all steps 2 more times, including the prep: getting rid of old files etc.

I checked IE Help/About IE and it reports that 6.0 is installed. But the MS Techie has warned that this will appear even if installation is damaged or incomplete.

Any ideas?

babthrower:

I did a search as I'd remembered a thread describing how to repair IE6...there's a lot of information in it, so you might want to print it out.

Is this spyware?/cache cleaning

Don't let the title of the thread put you off; there's tons of information, in the thread, about repairing IE6.

Coincidentally I had a problem with IE6.0 where it would not (on this site) allow me to post a reply etc....so I downloaded OPERA and everything was ok.
Obviously it was a cliché in IE 6.0....so tried everything and I mean everything..all the knowledge base things on repairing...System restore...defrag...Delete temp Internet files..etc etc,Security settings and every other possible thing ,it was driving me nuts.
As a last resort I had to reinstall XP home and every thing is now Ok again....has me completely baffled as to the cause, but can tell you this trying to repair IE6.0 is a nightmare NO MATTER what all the EXPERTS? say..well it was for me anyway....all I can say is the best of luck, and hope it turns out easier for you than it was for me!
