I can't seem to open any pdf files, i don't know what happened.
Thanks *********************************************************** 02-15-07, 06:49 PM clarebear Something may have happened to your Adobe Reader.
Download it here for free. *********************************************************** 02-16-07, 07:14 AM butter when i go to download it it won't let me go all the way it comes up "the older version of adobe reader 8 cannot be removed *********************************************************** 02-16-07, 10:03 AM Dwight Have you tried uninstalling the older version from the Contol Panel --> Add-Remove Programs applet?
Dwight *********************************************************** 02-16-07, 10:59 AM butter I did think of that but i have so many on my computer which ones should i delete -adobe acrobat 5.0 -adobe atmosphere player for acrobat & adobe reader -adobe flash player 9 active x -adobe reader 7.0.8 -adobe shockwave player -adobe type manager 4.0 -adobe download manager 2.0 (remove only) Thanks *********************************************************** 02-16-07, 07:09 PM Dwight Uninstall all of the Adobe Reader files, including the download manager. Don't uninstall these other Adobe files.
Adobe flash player 9 active x Adobe shockwave player Adobe type manager 4.0
Then download the new program file. All files that are needed to run .PDF files will be downloaded and then installed.
Dwight *********************************************************** 02-17-07, 09:05 AM butter Ok i deleted everthing you said but when i deleted adobe 7.0.8 it said "this patch package could not be opened, verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it" when i do a search on my computer for this file nothing comes up. - and it won't download the new adobe reader 8, it stops downloading and says "the older version of adobe reader 8 cannot be removed but when i do a search on that nothing comes up.
Thanks *********************************************************** 02-17-07, 09:52 AM Dwight You're saying "deleted" but do you mean uninstalled? There is a difference. If it won't uninstall and it will not reinstall because of the older version, then your only recourse is remove it from the Registry. You can download a highly recommended free one from this link.
The Web page: Easy Cleaner
This is the Registry cleaner tool recommended by Fred Langa of http://langa.com
What this cleaner will do is look in the system registry and remove all entry's that are out of date or non-working.
I hope this helps!
Dwight *********************************************************** 02-17-07, 02:58 PM butter I downloaded the cleaner and i deleted some of them from the unneccessary files, i couldn't find any in the registry one, but it won't delete adobe7.0.8 it says again that this patch package could not be opened, and i still can't download adobe reader 8
Also when i did a scan for both the registry and the unneccessary files i got alot of files come up, how do i know which ones to delete
Thanks *********************************************************** 02-17-07, 06:09 PM Dwight Delete the Temporary Internet Files, the Cookies and the History list. Do this in the Control Panel --> Internet Options applet. Look in the "General" tab under Internet Files.
As far as the Registry cleaner...the point of the utility program is to find outdated / unnecessary entry's and point them out to you so that you can remove them.
For safety sake, create a restore point first so that if the deleted items are necessary, you can do a System Restore.
To create a restore point: 1) Click Start 2) Click Run 3) Type in: msconfig 4) Click Launch System Restore 5) Choose "Create a restore point" 6) Give you restore point a name 7) Restart the computer when prompted
Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Explore". In the Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe
Delete the Adobe Acrobat 7.0 folder and all of it's contents.
Once you have done this, run the Registry cleaner and allow it to remove the entry's it points out as needing removal. When complete, restart the computer and see if you can now download / install the newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Dwight *********************************************************** 02-17-07, 07:05 PM butter when i try to delete the adobe file 7.0 this comes up "cannot delete pdfshell.dll access is denied, make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use." *********************************************************** 02-17-07, 07:22 PM Dwight Try removing the pdfshell.dll file in Windows Safe Mode. Restart the computer. At the first Windows screen, repeatedly press and release the F8 key until you see the Windows Startup menu. Use the arrow keys to high light Windows Safe Mode. Press the Enter Key. Use the administrator login and when opened, try removing the pdfshell.dll file.
Dwight *********************************************************** 02-17-07, 08:03 PM butter I not really sure what you mean, i'm a little hesitant because i'm not good at this, i think i know someone who may be able to come over and help me, i'm just afraid i'll do something wrong. Thank you for your help, i may still try this on my own, if i get it fixed i'll let you know.
