When you go to your disk cleanup in XP, it also gives you the option to check the "compress files" box.

I have over a million of them.

I wanted to check with you guys first before I attempted this action..... Is it safe?

(I'm soooooo lame - but an excellent driver!!)

The administrative tools included with XP are generally safe to use when used properly.

The Disk Cleanup tool should only try to 1) remove downloaded program files from your "Downloaded Program Files" folder (mostly just Java controls and applets left over from when some web pages load) and 2) clean up your temporary internet files cache.

Both of these are entirely safe and at worst will cause you to wait a little longer the next time you surf.

As for the "Compress Files" setting:

If you check this box XP will compress certain files that have not been used recently (I think the default is 50 days). There is no danger of losing these files, but this can cause slower access the next time you use them. They should be automatically restored when you need them.

Here is the standard MS info on the disk cleaning tool:
MS Help

Hope this helps!
