Have my laptop set up and working, but every time I click on the Windows Media Player icon, I get some little player - no library, no files, nothing - with "Toshiba" at the top. I don't want Toshiba, I want Windows Media Player. How can I get it back?

Thanks for any help.

This is a matter of setting the "File Associations" to the Windows Media Player. There are two methods you can use to do this.

Right click on your My Computer Icon and choose "Explore". In the Explore window, click on "Tools", then Folder options. In the Folder options window, click on the View tab and uncheck the option to hide file extensions of known types.

Then
(1) Navigate to the music file that you wish to play with WMP. Right click on the file and choose "Open With". In the Open With menu, choose "Choose Program" and check the "always use this program to run files of this type" option. OK you selection.

See this picture

(2) See this picture

Open WMP
Maximize the window
Click Tools/Options
Click File Types tab
Check the File types you wish to associate with WMP
Click the OK button to complete.
I hope this helps!

Thank you, Dwight, I will try your method.

However, I can't access any music files on my laptop. They are all stored on the desktop. I did download them (or thought I did) to a flash drive and then opened it on the laptop, but it showed nothing.

I fear I am missing something. Wah! Wah! Confused

It can sometimes be difficult to determine exactly which drive the flash drive is on. One way to check this is to open the My Computer icon. Then, while watching the list of drives shown in My Computer, insert the flash drive into the USB port. The new drive will appear on the screen so that you can verify which drive you need to use to access the flash drive.

Also, it is possible that the flash drive is plugged into a different USB slot than before or that another device has been added to your system and the drive letter has changed. In that case, you will need to use the above procedure to identify the flash drive.

Also, you may have saved the files to a backup drive or into the "C" drive. You can do a search for the file type. For instance:

search for *.mp3 for files in the mp3 format
or
*.wav for files in the .wav format.

The *. tells the machine that you want all files of that file type, with any file name.

I hope this helps!

Dwight, the flash drive is definitely "E." Searches for *.mp3 and *.jpeg files produced nothing. I don't know how to search a particular drive or application, though, so my searches may have been the C drive only...?

What kind of audio files are you looking for? If you like, give me a call and we can go through this together.

Catty... why don't you do a search on your entire laptop for these mp3 & jpeg files... they may have Inadvertently been saved in a different folder from your flash drive...

Why .jpg files? You're interested in audio files, right?

My .jpg comment was intended for Cattywampus. I want to be sure that I understand what she is trying to do.

I would also like to transfer images, but it's not critical.
