Can ram files and Windows Media files be converted to MP3? What about videos? Can the video be taken out and have the audio remain? If so, would anyone be able to convert some files from my computer to MP3? Thanks.

For converting Windows Media Audio to MP3, Acoustica's MP3 to WAV program will work just fine.

http://www.mp3towave.com/wma/wma-to-mp3.htm

RealMedia is harder to transcode. A semi-simple way to transcode it is to use RealPlayer 10 to burn the file to an audio cd. Then, proceed to rip it as an MP3. (Works for Windows Media as well, just use WMP to burn the clips to CD Audio.)

As for separating the audio from a video, VirtualDub may help you with that.

Hope this was helpful!

Yeah, thanks, Wooden. Very helpful.

When I try to burn the ram file, it says it's an unsupported media type though.

Alternately you could use the 30 day trial of dBpower Amp Music Converter.

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

After downloading go back to the page and click on the tab 'codec central' to get the codecs you need. The codec for Real Media files is under 'Other Codecs'.

I tried the program, Gar. It took awhile and at first it kept saying it was missing a filter. Then I did something that must've fixed it and it converted but there was no sound in the file. It was like an empty file. I just gave up. What could've been wrong?

Thanks, Methos. I'll give it a try. Have you tried it?

Do the ram files have to have a size greater than 1K to be converted? Maybe 1K isn't actually storing any music. Some of the ram files that I have downloaded actually seem to be connected to their source on the internet because sometimes the file won't work anymore, saying it's lost its connection, even though they are downloaded. While the 1K don't seem to transfer the audio when I convert it, the ones with a greater size do.

Can you give us an example of a .RA file (by posting a link) that "...because sometimes the file won't work anymore, saying it's lost its connection...".

I suspect that you're right about the file, that is just a link to a file on the Internet where the actual audio file is located.

Another conversion program available for download is Wavepad. I've had good luck with this one, at it does have Real Audio file filters.

I've tried it and it works well for just about any format of audio or video.

1K is too small to contain any audio. In most formats, that's the equivalent of less than a tenth of a second. I assume that those files are links to streaming files. Streaming is usually done to prevent you from downloading the actual file, often because it's copyrighted (in which case you shouldn't be recording it).

If the file isn't copyrighted, then your best bet is to actually play the file in Realplayer while recording with another program.

I've used this one to do exactly that, but I'm sure there are better ones out there:

C:\Documents and Settings\[name]\My Documents\My Music\9[1](1).rm is a link to a downloaded file that won't work anymore. And http://tinyurl.com/f9urq is what it says when it says it can't be found.

Ah! Thanks, Methos. I never realized that. But it makes a lot of sense now. And most of the files I'd like to convert actually are from legal sources, so that's good.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

This is the page that opened when the address (that you provided) was clicked:

File not found

So obviously, the "file" you downloaded is just a link to an online file.

Oh wait. Copyrighted sources can't be rerecorded. Damn, that's a never mind then. Oh well.
