The speakers on my laptop have apparently given out. Can't get any sound. Is there any way I can find out if that's what has happened? My volume is turned on.

Can you hear normal sound through headphones plugged into their jack/socket? If so the problem is more likely to be the speakers. If not it's more likely to be the sound card. External speakers of any size can be driven by a headphones output.

Professor, I finally found some earphones and yes, I can hear my sound through them - not very loud, but then, I am hard of hearing. Is there anything I can do to restore my speakers?

If you can hear through the earphones then your external speakers must be shot. Get a new set of them.

Try this Catty

Look for the icon that Looks like a small grey Ball bearing will show a "Volume" label when you pass your Mouse Pointer over it
And Right Click it
There are 2 choices on the Menu select Adjust Audio Properties

Window will open.
In the Middle is a slider marked Device Volume Is that pushed all the way to the High setting?
And there are 2 tick boxes here as well Mute should be Unticked and the Volume Control icon Is best left ticked
Press Apply then Ok to save the setting
Any better?


PS Cannot find the Icon? Can open this by going into the Control Panel And clicking on Sounds and Audio Devices(Icon is the same as the one by the clock)

My laptop speakers are so puny that I added small, cheap external speakers plugged into the headphone jack. Click. They're $19.01 w/ free shipping from NextWarehouse.com. You don't get Carnegie Hall, but they make decent sound with a 3W amp powered by USB (no AC cord).

Try this:

Left Click the Start tab on the Desktop

Drag Mouse up to Control Panel & Left Click

Drag Mouse to 'Sound & Audio Devices' Icon & Left Click

Drag Mouse to 'Advance Tab' & Left Click

Left Click the Down Tab

Drag to whichever Tab you have for your speakers, i.e., Laptop mono speakers or Laptop stero speakers & Left click that tab

On next window, left Click 'OK'

On next window, drag Mouse to 'Speaker Volume' & left Click

On next windows make sure the Volume Level is set to 'High'

Drag Mouse up to 'Device Volume' & set to High

Drag Mouse to 'Advance & Left Click

Check to see that all Volume controls are set to Maximum. i.e., all the way up

Make sure none of the 'Mute all' or 'Mute' Tabs are ticked

If everthing is as required then, and your speakers are NOT defective, then you should be able to hear from them.

I am sorry, Donald, but I became blocked at "Down Tab." I don't have one. Most of the rest of the stuff I have already done, but one suggestion you made I haven't tried. Will try that and get back to you. Well, that didn't work either. I think I have scoped out all the volume controls and made sure mute is not selected, and that all volumes are turned to high. The only thing I don't know is whether I have mono or

Um Catty? Is the volune wheel maxed out? It'll be tucked underneath the Keyboard is very easu to turn the volume down (by accident) If you alway work with your body close to the control and the Volume decreases over time

The answer came to me where you sai the sound was very low then Nothing .Therefore the Speaker volume is Up against the stop @ "0"
Catty? Pop in a music Cd and set it running next max out this Control and Keep listening! Ideally Try any to fix it so it doesn't move bay accident by by Sticking a piece of sticky tape over the wheel

Bedstor, you are an absolute angel. That was indeed the problem. Because it's located right next to the on/off switch for my network connection, I assumed it had something to do with that. Thank you! I can now listen to tunes!
