Shaw SecureThis site says that it provides security in these areas:
1. Firewall: Reduce the chance of unwanted intrusions into your system
2. Anti-virus: Reduce the threat of virus infection
3. Spyware protection: Keep your computer free of invasive spyware software
4. Pop-up blocker: Block unwanted and invasive pop-ups
5. Automatic updates: Keep your computer safe from the most recent threats
My only comment about this type of system is that you are putting all of your eggs into one basket. If nothing goes wrong with the system and if the programmers created perfect software, your system is completely protected.
Te problem with that is the fact that your system is running in the real world. Each of these 5 protective elements is a complex issue unto itself. I prefer to use what I call "layered" protection. By that I mean that I use a different program to protect for each of the 5 elements. For home use, all the 5 are provided free of change, and all are available for download on my
Website. The list I use is as follows:
SpywareBlaster: A spyware prevention tool (in my opinion, this is the most important single element).
Ad-Aware: Spyware detection - removal tool.
Spybots: Spyware detection - removal tool.
AVG - AntiVirus from Grisoft (Free for home use, pro version for commercial use)
ZoneAlarm: Firewall (Free for home use, pro version for commercial use)
Hosts: (file) Used to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers.
Hosts fileWith all of these elements installed and if kept up-to-date with system updates the system is about as protected as it is possible to make it. In my opinion this is a better way to do it, but it does involve some effort where a single system as that offered by Shaw Secure (and other commercial products like Norton Internet Security / McAfee Security Suite) are easier. The ease of use does come with a price tag; they will tend to bog your system down as they are resource "hogs".
