My screen changes all by its self.. Normally it is set at 800x600, but it will go to 640x480 all by itself.. Happens when I go on line...
I have tried going into display in safe mode and changing back, but that dosen't last.
I'm doing something wrong , but what?

Could be a piece of spyware that is trying to start? And another security program or I.E. setting has shut the door partially Then the only outward sign is your resolution changing?
To detect the cause of this install and run the scan with Ad-aware from Lavasoft (www.lavasoftusa.com ) this will isolate the thing that may be at the root of this issue?
Then download Spywareblaster from www.javacoolsoftware.com this stops a lot of these getting a hold of your computer in future (Both are free)
Have to keep them updated (once per week) to keep them running at 100%
If after doing this the Problem still happens. The next program HijackThis from www.merijn.org (I think the address has changed?) needs an experienced eye and it has to be submitted to a specialised forum, because if you tick the wrong box without knowing the consequences you can end up in real trouble. Download latest version (1.99.1) from this site www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
Program monitors many different internal programs but sent to a Busy site such as www.daniweb.com or www.webuser.co.uk (I post here) (have to register to post) you should get a reply quite quickly
Tip: There are Clear Help instructions on how to set up the Program pinned on these
forums
And if you get it right you'll get something similar to this (everyone has a different list)
this is clean apart from 1 dubious entry re "trojanscan" way down this list which I'm 50/50 on deciding what to do with it?

I think that it is likely that your Graphics Card driver is damaged and needs *replaced. I suggest you run the "DXDIAG" utility program and see if it identifies any "problem" files".

To run the utility program:

Click "Start"
Click Run
Type in: dxdiag
Click OK

When prompted, OK the "Do you want to verify with WHQL digital signature" question.

The DXDIAG utility program is downloaded from Microsoft's Windows update site. The latest version of DXDIAG is 9.0c. If yours is earlier than that, I suggest you go to the Microsoft Windows Update site and download the DirectX Runtime tool (which is the DXDIAG utility program). Get to the Windows Update site by clicking (in Internet Explorer) the Tools menu item, then "Windows Update".

Once the new DXDIAG program is downloaded and installed, and your system has been restarted, open it and check for problem files. If any are found, then I suggest you open the "Device Manager" utility and look to see what graphics card that you have. Once located, go to the manufacturer's site and download the appropriate driver file for your system.

Open "Device Manager" by right clicking on the "My Computer" icon and choosing "Properties". Then click the "Device Manager" tab. Click the little + sign to the left of the item to "expand" the folder to see the actual component name. When the component is selected, you can click on "Properties" to see additional information. Note: You can also get into the "System Properties" window from the Control Panel.

If your system is Windows 2000 or Windows XP, in "System Properties", click on the "Hardware" tab, then the "Device Manager" button. Right click on an item and choose "Properties" to see information about that item.

Some notes:
(1) You may find your graphics file download on the Microsoft Windows Update site under "Drivers". If so, you can download it from there. If your Graphics card is from Nvidia, I suggest you download your driver from the Nvidia site as they are often newer. Nvidia site Click on "Download Drivers".

(2) If your computer is from either Dell, Gateway or Hewlett Packard, you may find Graphic card driver updates on the technical support page of the appropriate company who assembled your system. Other makers may have update sites, too. In addition to graphic card drivers, you may find other component driver upgrades available for download as well.

(3) You may have a CD from your computer manufacturer that contains the graphic display driver file. It may be named something like "System Restore: Drivers", or it may have the graphic card name (like Nvidia or ATI ATI Graphic cards).

I hope this is of some help!

Dwight

*Often, when you play a game, your screen resolution is changed by the game to "640 x 480". Doing this can sometimes damage a graphic display driver file.

I suggest you try a new graphic display driver anyway. That sure sounds like a corrupted driver file problem to me.

Sorry, I forgot to add...
I don't think the monitor would cause this kind of problem. However, if you have another one that would not be difficult to try, you might want to "switch" monitors to see if that makes any difference.

You can find your Display Adapter in the "System Properties" / "Device Manger" tab.

Open "Device Manager" by right clicking on the "My Computer" icon and choosing "Properties". Then click the "Device Manager" tab. Next, had to download "Plug in".. After that downloaded the driver...

Assuming the monitor change does not correct the problem:

OK, let us review this situation. You have Windows XP Home Edition on your system. When you set your screen resolution at 800 X 600, the screen reverts back to 640 X 480. I understand that this occurs when you connect to the Internet. Does this happen when you open your Web Browser program or Email program or both? Please elaborate on this detail.

What Web browser program? What email program? Please elaborate on just when this "change" occurs. Find the Web browser name and version number in the program's Help menu/About command. Same for your email program.

I need some additional information

1. Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack ?) Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties" to get this information.

2. MAKE and MODEL of your computer

3. Manufacturer and Model of your Graphics card. (Get this information from the System Properties window as explained in my earlier post above).

The problem may be a failed graphic card. If that the case, you will need to replace the card itself. You will probably want to take this to a shop to fix, unless you're comfortable with opening the case and removing / replacing cards. I would like to take one more stab at replacing the graphics driver program file before replacing the hardware. With these answers to the system information requested above, perhaps another driver can be found.

The problem is solve.
I kept thinking to myself that there shouldn.\'be any problem with a 6 month old computer..
I had recently up-graded (?) to AOL9 Security...
Got to thinking when the problem started and put 2 and 2 together...
Removed 9 Security, reinstalled regular 9 and have had no problems.....
Ah...... I sleep peacefully tonight....

It's down to a small program called ActiveX
I have a similar issue with my own computer but
I'm beginning to suspect Microsofts own Antispyware program has blocked the path to downloading the Latest Security updates by denying access on one of these Red Face (been at it for nearly a month Frown)
Even we have almost insolvable issues Frown
Shall remember how you got out of this spot of bother and pass it on (Thanks for posting Smile)
