Using Win Me:
Certain icons from assorted programs seem to place themselves (without permission) in the lower tool bar right next to the time.
Often they are easily removed by right or left clicking on the icon to bring up an option to remove the icon. But not so with others such as the "C-media mixer" and the 2 icons lovingly provided upon installation of Norton Internet Security 2004.
Some icons are used often, but many, like the 3 just mentioned are not and just take up valuable space. I have tried hunting through the various program preferences to no avail. I have tried simply dragging the icons to the desktop. Nothing works. Can you help???
thanks

That area of the Task Bar is called the "System Tray". It is used to show programs that are running in the background.

The "Norton Internet Security" Icon shows that the program is doing its task. You may be able to shut off the System Tray Icon by unchecking the option in the Norton Internet Security "Options".

Open "Norton Internet Security" and then "Options". Look for a line that reads something like "Show the Auto Protect Icon in the [System] Tray". If you see that, uncheck it. That will leave the program running, but without displaying the Icon.

The "C-Media Mixer" provides
System Tray access to change audio settings.

You can also change the audio settings via:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Multi-Media-Sounds
or
Start -> Programs

Note: You might find an option (in the Control Panel) to display the C-Mixer Icon in the System Tray. If so, you can uncheck the option to remove the Icon from the Tray.

Also, to remove the program from your startup list, you can:

Click Start
Click Run
Type in:
msconfig
Click OK
Click the Start Up tab
Uncheck the "mixer.exe" file
Click OK
Restart the system when prompted.

I hope this helps!

Dwight

Thank you Dwight you ol diamond enthusiast, you.
As Martin Mull likely says daily: It's so easy when you know the language.
ps
the media mixer won't budge. The multimedia options allow removal of the icon which controls volume, but not the mixer.
