The Norton product may well be the problem. However, if you're running Microsoft Office, I would suggest you update that first in case that is where the problem lies.

You can update by allowing the "Microsoft" update in the Windows Update page. Open Internet Explorer, Tools menu and click the Windows Update option. If offered the Microsoft update allow that.

If you would rather just update the Office (Assuming that you have it) you can open any Office product (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and click into the Help Menu / Microsoft Office Online option.

Once there run the updates. You will have to allow the ActiveX to run. If you're far behind with the updates, there may be 5 or 6 of them to run so it may take an hour or so to complete.

I believe the Norton product may well be the problem, though. At startup it run a series of small programs, all of them taking time.

If it were me, I would remove the Norton completely and replace it with the free Grisoft AntiVirus (AVG is the product name) This is free for home use. For professional use, you can get the pro version. You can download it here. For your Firewall, I suggest the free version of ZoneAlarm which can be downloaded here. Again, this is free for home use. For professional use, you can get the pro version.

In my opinion, Norton is not a good product. I believe it is trying to do too much and so if a problem with it develops, your whole system is adversely affected. I have had very good success with the free products that I linked to above.

Uninstall Norton from the Add-Remove programs in the Control Panel, but bear in mind that removing Norton generally requires you to also download and run a manual program removal tool which can be found here. Click on your product, and then search for "norton removal tool". Follow the instructions to run the program.

I also recommend the AntiSpyware products available here.

Adding all of these products will provide a layer of protection for your system, but from different program files. If one of them goes bad, it will not have such an adverse effect on your system.

I'm having the same problem. Just installed IE 7 and everything is now screwed up.

If I want to reinstall XP do I have to uninstall it first?

Reinstalling Windows is a major step. It may be necessary, but in my mind, it should be the last thing to do.

If IE7 is running slowly, click into the Tools menu and choose the "Manage Add-ons" command. You may have to right click in the area where the menu would be and choose "Menu Bar" to see the Tools menu.

Disable any add-ons that you don't normally use. This will speed up the IE browser.

As indicated above, it is very important to update MS Office. What antivirus program are you running? As indicated above, that may be a problem area.

I hope this will help.

I agree with Dwight Starting IE 7 with Add-ons is looking for trouble. You have to do a bit of thinking before letting these on board on a computer with a Slowish Processor and say 512MB RAM it may halt some things Frown

Dodgecity's Crapcleaner Idea is also good
If you click the tools Icon you can get to the Windows Startup list and edit it
Your target is to get as few Icons as possible showing next to the Clock Leave the Antivirus and the Network Icons...All you do to get the Item is look on the Start Menu In future(you lose nothing) Wink

It dosen't do much in reality but it restores a tiny bit of speed back .....
Note Messengers such as ICQ do gobble a lot of the speed up,Windows Messenger can be a right Pain if active all the time (Interrupting your surfing) Can be isolated altogether via an Ad-Aware Add-on or a Firewall "block" Smile

Catty? With IE 7 there is another way of opening the IE Browser without any of the Add-ons starting up (Just discovered this)
Open IE from the Start Menu Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools
Now look to the very bottom of the List and you'll see "Internet Explorer ( No Add-ons)"
Click this and the browser starts up with the message

quote:
Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons

All Internet Explorer add-ons, such as ActiveX controls or toolbars, are turned off. Some webpages might not display correctly.
To continue to your home page, click the Home button.

Last but not least do a Defrag Smile

If all else that has been mentioned in this post fails to correct this problem, go to:

Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore

Bedstor, good find! I had not seen this option before.

Just a note, if you like you can send this IE shortcut to the Desktop. Just right click on the Internet Explorer (No Add ons) and choose: Send to Desktop (create Shortcut). The shortcut will be on your Desktop. See this picture of the start menu: click

4.) Scheduled Tasks
5.) Security Center

Do you have the new IE 7.0? In Internet Explorer, click Tools/Windows Update and see if there is an update available. This will only be in a Windows XP version.

Dwight & Don
The Option is also found by right clicking on the Internet Explorer icon on the Desktop (2nd item down on the menu) Smile
PS Don the Lay out of the New Explorer Home page is entirely different
If You still find it's not changed then you have Version 6...and B) Any other operating System other than XP will I imagine reject the Download and carry on with version 6 Red Face

Wow! What a lot of info. Thank you all very much. I'll try some of these things, the ones I can understand. Unfortunately, I am still not getting any notifications and have given up on it.

Thanks again.

Dwight, I could not access MS Office Online through Word, but I did get it in excel.

"Need more help" took me to a page that said the choices were only for programs purchased separately, not already installed on the computer.

I use AVG.

Bedstor, System Tools gives me no such option.
At the bottom is "System Information," and "System Restore."

I did install 7 but then uninstalled it. Don't think it worked, though, because the IE home page has changed: it's yahoo, where I got it.

When I right click on the IE desktop icon, I get no such option. The 2nd item on the menu is "Run as."

Thanks for all help.

Catty?
If you have Ie 7 installed correctly the page layout should be like this (its less cluttered than before)
www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

Tip to everyone (and Catty).. look to the top right corner of the Blue area and if you cannot see the words :
you are using Internet Explorer 7
then you may be able to get the download link displayed

If No Joy we can point you toward another download site.

Catty
I missed this In your reply
The Homepage setup option is on the Welcome message that comes up when you install IE 7.0...I was getting Google Uk instead of Google .com Mad So I eventually got it to the right page by using the "set as Homepage" option .Its a bit more prone to picking spurious homepages on this list (The old version did it too Frown) but deleting those you don't want and apply the page you do want seems to do the trick Wink
Make take a few goes?
Do also turn the Phishing filter on
Does take a wee while to adjust to where the old buttons have been relocated ( I like the New way the History and Favourites work ) In my opinion its easier than the version 6.0 Smile

I must apologize to everyone for messing up my reply above. However, I tried reinstalling MSN Premium (butterfly) and that solved nearly all my problems, including slow startup, constant freezing while trying to access email and others. I also did the tactics other members suggested. Thank you all for your help.

Butter, have you tried reinstalling your browser?
