In a recent thread someone posted that their dog ate Wink the Windows disk that came with their computer. How would you make a backup disk in that case? Looking at Windows for me (98SE) shows over 2 gig. Obviously this contains more than the windows itself as first installed and must include all sorts of files I have added.

gatman,

To me, the best idea in that case would be to install another hard drive, and use it for backup purposes, or backup the master drive to the slave, then burn the backup files to disc from there. I'm not sure if you can copy just the original Windows files from the hard drive to a disc or not, so this is what I came up with. Just my suggestion.

If your .cab files were installed on your computer, you can save them to a CD.

If they are installed, they might be in the:

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder (See Note below)

Sometimes they are in;

C:\win98     or     C:\win98SE

You can search for them by going to Start/Find/Files or Folders and typing in
*.cab
Look in your C:\ drive, and if your drive was partitioned, look any any other fixed hard drive you may have.

If you have a friend with the same Operating System on their computer and the correct Windows installation CD, you could borrow it and copy the CD.

You will need to record your Product Key code from your computer which can be found in the Registry here: Need to find product keys!

Finally, you can contact Microsoft about getting a replacement CD shipped to you.

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware

I hope this helps!

Dwight

*Note: Windows ME .cab files are often in:
C:\Windows\Options\Install

There's a very small freeware download, that will find your product key immediately.

Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder.
