We were given a copy of Windows XP Professional which we now know to be pirated. I would like to replace it with a genuine copy of XP but obviously would like to keep the cost down. I have seen an Upgrade version of XP Home version which is a lot cheaper then a full Windows XP Professional or full XP Home version.

If possible, can anyone tell me if the XP Upgrade or the Full version of XP Home will overwrite the Pirated version of XP Pro we now have?

Darrin,
My suggestion would be to get a good copy off of Ebay. There are copies auctioned off every day that have not been registered or activated. Good luck!

Howdy:

Neither will overwrite it.. However, If you purchase a legal copy, Microsoft will allow you to simply change the Key Code to a legit keycode without damaging your system or anything on it..

I have to correct the post made by Murray. Either a full or upgrade version of XP WILL overwrite (format and install fresh) the existing software. Set your computer to boot from the CD, insert the WIN XP CD, reboot and follow the instructions. Create a new partition (it will delete the old), allow it to format the partion (removes the old program) and install your new one. If using an upgrade CD, you will be prompted to insert a copy of a previous version (Win 98SE, Win ME, Win2K)in the CD player, then remove and continue the install.
I suggest you purchase an OEM copy of WIN XP. You can purchase it from many different on line retailers. The cost should be around $90.00 and you may have to purchase a hard drive. The only drawback to the OEM version is the lack of Microsoft tech support. One place to purchase is here:

And if you've lost your OEM number, try

this.

Qualserve:

Now I have to disagree with you.. Smile

What you are proposing is NOT a simple over-write but a complete format and re-install.. BIG difference..

I stand by my original post.. Neither will overwrite XP Pro, but you could do a complete clean install or use the Microsoft option !!

Murray, you are correct. I think I did mention reformating in my first answer, and should have defined the difference.
