Charlie, I think the network configuration is either corrupt, or contains incorrect entries. Removing unneeded network components, and reinstalling the required ones, should resolve the problem.

(1) If the computer is not set up for multiple users -- Double-click My Computer and the C: drive icon, then right-click the Windows folder and click Find. In Named, type *.PWL, then press Enter. Right-click each listed file, then click Delete (and OK if prompted). Close Find and the Windows folder.

(2) Double-click My Computer, Control Panel, and Network.

If Microsoft Family Logon is not listed -- Click Add and double-click Client. In the left pane, click Microsoft and, in the right pane, double-click Microsoft Family Logon.

If Client for Microsoft Networks is listed -- Click Client for Microsoft Networks and click Remove.

Under Primary Network Logon, choose Windows Logon. Click OK. If you're prompted for your Windows CD, insert the CD in the drive, click OK, then type the path to the Win98 folder on the CD (usually D:\Win98, where D is the letter of the CD drive) and click OK.

Restart the computer. When prompted to log on, click OK.

Hi Mate
Thanks for the instructions I followed them to the letter, but now on start up get this notice;
(cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application.
the device file (system.ini) no longer exists.
if ypu deleted this on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program,if you still want to use the application associated with this device file try reinstalling that application to replace the missing files
z:vvines.386)
press a key to continue.
well Tom I dont understand a word of that,
can you help?
regards
Challie

Challie, this is not something you caused, but is a somewhat common problem. A program you installed (or one piggybacked on it) has added Banyan VINES (virtual networking system) support. There are a few approaches you can take to resolve the issue. Please print this reply for reference, as you may need to follow the instructions offline.

First, you can remove the entries from System.ini (this is a quite reliable and quick fix). Click Start, Run, type System.ini and press Enter.

Under [boot], place a semicolon and space in front of

secondnet.drv=vines.drv

Note the line which begins shell=. If it does NOT read shell=explorer.exe, place a semicolon and space in front of the line. Under it, add the line shell=explorer.exe (and make very sure you do NOT misspell explorer.exe).

Scroll to [386Enh]. Under this heading, place a semicolon and space in front of

secondnet=z:vvines.386
or
secondnet=vvinesd.386
or
secondnet=vvinesd.386

Scroll to [network]. Under this heading place a semicolon and space in front of

multinet=vines411
or
multinet=vines500
or
multinet=vines550

Click File, Exit, and Yes to save the changes, then restart the computer. NOTE: You can reverse these changes if any new problems appear as a result.

Second, you can uninstall Banyon VINES support. Double-click My Computer, Control Panel, and Network. Click the Banyon DOS/Windows 3.1 client, then click Remove. Click each Banyon VINES... protocol, and click Remove.

Click OK and WAIT. Windows will make some driver and configuration changes over the next 15 to 30 seconds. When all activity has stopped, restart the computer. NOTE: If either of these components is damaged, it may not be displayed in the list. If so, you must reinstall the component, restart the computer, then remove it as described.

Third, you can reinstall VINES support. Double-click My Computer, Control Panel, and Network.

Click Add and double-click Client, then click Banyon and double-click Banyon DOS/Windows 3.1 client.

Click Add and double-click Protocol, then click Banyon and double-click Banyon VINES ethernet Protocol.

Click Add and double-click Protocol, then click Banyon and double-click Banyon VINES token ring Protocol.

Click OK and WAIT. Windows will make some driver and configuration changes over the next 15 to 30 seconds. When all activity has stopped, restart the computer.

Do you mean virtual TrUck setup? Put your cable or DSL setup CD back in the drive, then restart the computer.

The unwritten rule on this site, Challie is that you keep on asking ,we keep on answering,We thrive on going over things again, We aim to give at least several suggestions, if not a solution to problems Wink

Challie, most of us find problem solving to be a lot of fun. For diehard troubleshooters like me and others, the harder puzzles give the greater satisfaction.

As Dwight points out, just keep posting if an issue is not completely resolved, and we'll plug at it until it is resolved. We've sometimes spent upwards of two weeks on the really difficult cases (and solved them, too).

Your "Enter network password" and missing vvines.386 are really parts of a single problem, while the VTruck issue is separate, but I've encountered both before. Only a relatively small amount time was involved in responding, and it was certainly not "wasted" time.

On another note, I presume you now have a high-speed Internet connection. I'd like to point out that it is VITAL to use a firewall to repel attacks by hackers. Without this protection, it is nearly certain that your computer will be invaded and compromised within the first day you're connected.

If the system connects via a router, a "hardware" firewall may be included in the device, and this will provide a decent level of protection. "Software" firewalls are also available, such as the free (for personal use) ZoneAlarm and Sygate personal firewalls.

Thanks for your support Guys, I was starting to feel really stupid, I had not realised what a close family I have signed up with.
What I have is more of an irritation than a problem, on start up, I get an ERROR notice saying; (cannot find a file necessary to continue virtual truck setupSmile
e:\installs\terausbwtruck2.exe.
I tried Your suggestion Tom, but nothing changed
maybe I did'nt do it right? I look foreward to any further suggestions.
Thanks again
