I have all kinds of crap starting up automatically that I don't want. How can I edit the startup file? Have searched for info on AP and elsewhere, but apparently I'm using the wrong words.

Thanks for any help.

There are 2 ways Catty Did we give you Crap Cleaner to download and clear out your Files?
a while back? www.ccleaner.com

Open this up
The answer is to click on the Tools Icon (in the left column, and then "Startup" box on the next page to get to the edit list and then ask again if you are not too sure what can go.

The usual route is to Type "Msconfig' in the Run box (on the Start Menu) Then the Startup tab on the far right side..and the easiest items to go are those labelled "Common startup" (tick boxes to be unticked) but Do Post again if you want something to go specifically as you may have to untick a few items on the list to do it properly OK?

LOL I'm trying to decide between my two Princes, Dwight and bedstor. I'm at a loss, they are both such great guys. In truth, I appreciate them both so much for all the help they have given me and everybody else on this site. I can't thank them enough.

bedstor, I downloaded cccleaner and found four "common" files. A couple of those I deleted, the rest i kept, including "google updates link." then I clicked on "issues" and found a list of "Missing Shared" DDL files, some MS and some "unused extension." They are all checked. If you want to see the whole list, I will see if I can copy and paste it here.

Ah, then don't choose. Feelings will inevitably be hurt.

Yes, bedstor, I have done that. Some won't exit, like "Java (TM) 2 Platform," and "Safely remove hardware," and "Screen 1024 x 786" blah, blah. There's also a DAD (Corel?) icon which I don't want.

Thanks for your help, guy. (Is that better, y'all?)

You haven't mentioned which computer this is...is it the new one? Or is it the one I worked on?

When discussing computers, the devil is in the details. If this is Windows XP or if this is Windows Vista Operating System will make a lot of difference.

Oh, sorry, Dwight my man. It is the one you worked on. I did manage, following bedstor's directions, to get most of them off. The only thing that remains is DAD (Corel?) It's in my icons when I log on, and I don't want it.

Have you finished with the program that the DAD(Corel) icon belongs to Catty?

Try the other way via Msconfig in the Run box ..It might show up on that check list?
and run the issues routine again It may clear that entry too (the Startup list Points to the Registry so any deletions can be tidied up by the Registry cleaner on CCleaners "Issues" routine Smile

PS I Found this
quote:
Corel Desktop Application Director The Desktop Application Director (DAD) gives you easy access to all Corel applications ... Available via Start - Programs

Thats its sole Function so If you dont want Corel delete dadx.exe and then run CCleaners Scan and delete all it finds
But If you can do it the other way then try that first Smile

Corel Desktop Application Director:
The Desktop Application Director (DAD) gives you easy access to all Corel® WordPerfect® Suite 7 applications. available via Start menu - Not required - Check the Start/All Programs/Startup folder to see if it is listed. If so, right click on the entry and choose "Delete". It will delete the startup shortcut but not damage the program that can be run manually.

If you don't see it there, try unchecking it in the MSCONFIG window.

Thank you, Dwight. I did that, and will see if it works. Thank you, too, bedstor. That appears to have solved the problem.

Best to you both.
