Are you talking about Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)? If so you can just download that at http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html But if you are talking about the Windows XP operating system CD, you have to buy that. ****************************************************************** 11-07-06, 03:49 PM Lora316K I know that I have to buy oprating system CD. I was asking about a good place to buy it. Or should I wait for Windows Vista to come out? ****************************************************************** 11-07-06, 03:57 PM Dwight I would suggest you have a computer shop burn you a copy of the Windows Operating System.
In order for them to do that for you legally, they will need to have the Certificate of Authenticity (Product Key) that should be on a sticker on the case of your computer.
Here is a link to a page with more information about this. In my area, the shop charges $20 for this service, while the full retail price for the CD is about $300.
And, by the way, if it were me, I would run the (System File Check) utility first and let the system fix itself, if it is able. This often works very well. The linked page has more detail. Dwight ****************************************************************** 11-07-06, 04:08 PM Lora316K I don't need a copy burned. I don't want to fully re-install my system. The only way to do that is to get a CD. Thank you for your help. I will just wait for Windows Vista, hopefully it will help. I had tried System File Check. It didn't do much good, because it askes for a CD which I don't have. ****************************************************************** 11-07-06, 04:21 PM Dwight I don't think I explained what I meant to say very well. By "have a copy burned" I mean for you to have them make you a Windows XP Pro CD, which you can use either to run the SFC or if you prefer, to reinstall your Windows XP Pro SP2 Operating System.
Computer shops purchase the Operating System license from Microsoft so that they can reinstall the OS on their customer's computers legally. They are permitted to use their copy to make additional copies which they can sell to properly licensed system owners.
The CD would be identical to what you would buy new. The main difference is the $280 or so less you would have to spend.
This is a legal CD because when you purchased your computer, you also purchased a license to use the Windows Operating System installed on the computer. The Certificate of Authenticity is your proof of purchase.
By the way, if you will read the page I linked you to above, you will note that it is possible to run the SFC without the CD, assumming the data found in the system folder is intact. Although, I agree, it is easier to user the CD and if it were me, that is what I would do. As far as the Windows Vista Operating System, Microsoft has announced plans to release the new software around the first of January. It is likely to be delayed at least a little bit.
In order to be able to run the new Vista Operating System, you will need to meet or exceed these hardware specifications: Windows Vista Specifications ****************************************************************** 11-07-06, 05:24 PM Lora316K This is a new computer. It is made to run Windows Vista. ****************************************************************** 11-07-06, 07:38 PM dodgecity you can buy at newegg. Big Grin ****************************************************************** 11-07-06, 10:09 PM Lora316K The place I bought the computer at suposed to give me free upgrade to Vista.
