Due to nerve damage in a couple fingers I prefer to use the mouse for most actions where others would use the left hand and hit 2 or more keys to travel.

Firefox 2.0 apparently has automatic tabbed browsing and I cannot find a way to de-select it. I really don't know a thing about tabs, had never seen or cared about them until getting this new version of Firefox. They are really creating a hassle in Gmail as all pages close when I only want to close out the new window that opened when I followed a link. The tabs display snippets of conversation in the middle of the page. Is it some toolbar that I can't locate?

Am I stuck with this? Does anyone know of a way around it? I managed to dis-able the automatic Spellcheck but can't undo the tabs.

Dorian was asking the same question. Go to Tools-> options. Click on Tabs. Your options will be there. I think if you don't want any tabs, you should pick 'other links from applications in new window' and 'force links that open in new windows' (then check)the same tab/window as a link.

Try it and see if that works.

Ok, Clare, I missed his post...and I did do a search! Let me see if I can figure this out. Thanks

I don't have those options in Tools,Tabs. I only have "new pages should be opened in a new window" and a couple more things that are not of use.
I don't have anything like "force links that open in new windows". I have already done what I could with the options I see. Grrrr!

What is happening is that you're clicking the close button at the top-right of the screen, which closes the Firefox window an all tabs opened within it.

You'll notice that on the tab bar, you'll see a little X at the right side. This is what should be used to close a tab! New tabs can be created by pressing Ctrl+T or double-clicking in a empty space along the tab bar.

By default, Firefox will open new windows into new tabs. To disable this behavior, open the Options window, then click Tabs. Select "a new window" under "New pages should be opened in:". This will prevent new tabs from automatically being opened. (See Screenshot)

Hope this was helpful.

Thanks, JWooden. I will have to spend some time researching this tabs thing. It is all new to me. I have opted for new pages to be opened in new windows but I still get them opened as tabs (I think); one upper right X will close all windows and a right click in the status bar will not work correctly either. I guess I am not understanding the whole concept correctly.

I will do more homework and get back to this thread. Thanks again.
