On ocassion, my friend's computer monitor doesn't shut off. It will stay on for a couple of days at a time!

Why do you think that happens? Is it because some kind of program is running in the background that he's not aware of?

ALSO, how risky is it to visit "porn" sites? I've told him that it's VERY risky and they can install all kinds of unwanted things!! He thinks I'm just trying to frighten him!!! Am I right?

Have your friend come to AP and take a look at this post I made early this morning: Please, educate EVERYONE. I finally, sorta, finished working on my roommate's PC about 30 minutes ago. It needs more work (about 6 hours worth, of my time), but I refuse to do anymore.

My roommate got all that garbage from, you guessed it, porn sites. It slowed his PC to a crawl, froze up everytime he clicked on anything and crashed after about 15 minutes of use.

I won't do anymore, because he's just going to redownload that "stuff" and end up needing a new PC...fortunately, I'm moving out in a few weeks and won't have to "help" anymore.

So, Tree...tell your friend to go anywhere, download anything he wants, but don't come crying when his PC crashes.

His PC may stay running because he's got some nice spy/malware called a dialer. This lovely piece of "garbage" likes to try and dial out, to "900" numbers that can get charged to your phone. If he's on DSL, he's safe, but it might be why his PC doesn't shut down...it's busy trying to do something behind his back.
