I'm not sure what a 15-second box is, but you can open the Display Properties window either from the:

Control Panel/Display
or
By right-clicking on any blank area of the Desktop and clicking the "Properties" command.

Once the "Display Properties" window is open, click on the "Settings" tab. You can drag the slider bar left or right to reduce or increase the screen resolution.

I hope this is of some help.

The 15 second box I referred to is an AOL thing... Once you set your screen setting, a box will appear to lock in the settings..
I have done what you say and also did it in safe mode, but without that box, it won't lock in....
