Ok, MY brother computer is having browser problems.

His IE browser or any browser on his computer keeps shutting down. They will not stay open. They will stay open for about 5 to 10 seconds and then shuts down on there own.

He uses windows XP. I'm afraid that he might have a virus. Do any of you have any tips for me to tell him so he can try to fix it?

He should run a scan to check for any virus on his system. The AntiVirus software must be up-to-date and if his is expired, he can use the free online scan at http://pcpitstop.com

With this type of problem, he may not be able to run the scan because the browser may close before the scan completes. If that is the case, he can attempt to scan in Safe Mode.

Enter Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing and releasing the F8 key on the keyboard when starting the computer. This must be started when the first screen image becomes visible and continuted until the Start Menu is visible. I suggest choosing Safe Mode with Network Support to allow an Internet connection.

He can also scan for spyware there, or he can download install 3 excellent, yet free tools. He can download three free tools at my site, http://dwightblackburn.com#spyware

He should run checks for spyware and browser hijacks. At the bottom of the spyware section at my site, he can click on the browser hijack check link and his browser will be tested for hijacks.

Please ask him to post again here if he needs user instruction with the spyware tools.

He can also download / install the HijackThis software and run a scan to check for problems. This one is somewhat complicated and I would suggest that the scan log be uploaded to a forum where he can seek expert assistance. The HijackThis page lists several forums for this purpose, and he can post it here, too.

Finally, all of these steps require Internet activity which will be a problem. If he can use another computer to download the programs, to install on his system, that would make ths list much easier to accomplish.

I have so far focused on problems that may be caused by either a virus or a problem with spyware. It is also possible that this problem is caused by some failure within Windows itself, so if none of these steps help, have him post here again and detail the steps he has taken and the results that he has observed.

I hope something here will help!

Dwight

Is this computer connecting with AOL? Is it connecting with People PC? If you're using one of these, then I suggest you uninstall the other one. Remove these from the Add-Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel. If you're using neither, then remove them both.

In the following list, I've suggested some items to remove, but this is a preference situation. If the item is something that you're using and like, you can just leave it. Those items that just recommend remove I don't believe they are providing you any benefit.

Bartshel.exe

If not using People PC...you may wish to remove this one.

I would suggest that these items be removed:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

(Use the Internet Options to set your preferred page, unless this one is the preferred page).

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://home.peoplepc.com/search

(Again, if this not your preference, you can remove this)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

(Again, if this not your preference, you can remove this)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

(Again, if this not your preference, you can remove this)

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://home.peoplepc.com/search

(Again, if this not your preference, you can remove this)

O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Companion BHO - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\COMPAN~1\Installs\cpn\ycomp5_5_7_0.dll

(For some reason, the Yahoo toolbar seems to cause browser problems. It can be removed in the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs utility).

O2 - BHO: PBlockHelper Class - {4115122B-85FF-4DD3-9515-F075BEDE5EB5} - C:\PROGRA~1\NETSCA~1\NETSCA~1\pbhelper.dll

(If not using Netscape, I suggest you remove this)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

(Remove this)

O2 - BHO: DriveLetterAccess - {5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswshx.dll

Users with this object complained of the following: "slow pc" (I suggest you remove this).

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Remove this

O3 - Toolbar: &Yahoo! Companion - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\COMPAN~1\Installs\cpn\ycomp5_5_7_0.dll

Remove this

Finally, I see that you're running the Internet Security version of Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus. I have had a lot of problems with this product and I usually suggest that home users uninstall this completely and then download and install the AVG AntiVirus from Grisoft. The main reason for this is that the Symantec product is just trying to do too much. It is the AntiVirus, it is a Firewall, it is an Internet Content monitor, is a spam protector...

All of these are necessary functions in a modern Internet connected computer, but when one utility program is trying to do them all and then it has problems, the entire system is put at risk. My preference is to spread these tasks out among a variety of different utilities so that a problem in any area is not a big issue.

I have had a lot of problems getting a "clean" unistall of the Norton product and have to use the manual unistall tool which you can find here: Norton Removal Tool

The Spyware program recommendations are shown in my first response. the AVG anti-virus can be downloaded from this AVG link In addition, you can download a free firewall from ZoneLabs (ZoneAlarm) ZoneAlarm Use the free trial and downloads link.

These last two are free for home use. For business use, you can download the paid version.

I hope this helps!

From the HJT list it looks rather cluttered
Question...
Is his computer hard drive almost full?

If that is the case the Virtual drive space may may cause a crash without warning and deleting s small program may start it working again

Solution(s) there are several ..
A) A Defrag (run the Analyze scan to see how choked the Hard drive is)
B)Download and run Crapcleaner from www.ccleaner.com this will clean all those useless temp files and old files pointing
nowhere, also cleans the Registry of old links can also edit your Start-up list as well from here.Run the defrag program after running this program and you'll get the computer running at near enough the speed you'd expect Smile
Also, ask your brother what programs he has loaded but he touches once in a blue Moon and tell them to delete those.
Ps A scan with Ad-Aware may also ease any future congestion (update the Program first)
Adding to Dwights recommendation another good free reliable Antivirus service is Avast! from www.avast.com

Yea, he needs to delete the AOL stuff off his computer and he said he was going to delete the yahoo toolbar. He was useing AOL but they started taking more money than they should out of his bank account and caused him all kinds of problems.

He signed up for People PC a few months ago and so far so there OK. He knows less than I do about computer stuff so I been trying to fix it myself. I don't think his computer hard drive is that full. I think he said it was only around 30% full last time he checked. He does have some junk that needs to be taken off his computer.

Thanks you two for your help. I'll try to mess with it in a few days when I have time. I'll try to do the things you said...Matt Wink
