I cannot use the help in the start function on my xp. Hit the ? and nothing happens. F1 nothing happens. Did something fail to install on the upgrade?

I would GUESS the problem could be resolved doing a Windows XP Repair Install.
There are complete instructions available on this Microsoft VIP site . It goes without saying, read and heed the WARNING links.
I've never seen this problem before. I did find one site where a person posted a request for assistance with what sounds like a nearly identical situation. There were not any replies to the question, but I'll give you the link so you can follow the thread, should anyone respond.
Dwight ********************************************************* 03-06-04, 08:01 PM farang This is beyond my capabilities. I'll wait and see if any of your computor whiz peers can come up with anything. ********************************************************* 03-06-04, 09:18 PM Dwight Good idea. Did you do a clean install of the WinXP? If not, that might be a good way to clear this problem, too. Obviously, you will want to backup all of your data first.
Dwight ********************************************************* 03-08-04, 03:31 AM Bazcaz Dwight do you think this is worth a try?? http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fixwinxphelp.htm ********************************************************* 03-08-04, 08:14 AM farang Bazcaz Didn't wait for Dwight to comment. Tried it and now I have help. It took less than a second to repair. Tks much. ********************************************************* 03-08-04, 10:05 AM Dwight Great find, Bazcaz! I posted your link at the Open Tech Support site, also.
Dwight ********************************************************* 03-08-04, 12:54 PM cattywampus How about yelp for help? I am royaly teed off. I downloaded this beast - that link - to My Computer but now I can't access it. It doesn't show on my program menu. Did I put it in the wrong place? The program menu doesn't show half what I have on disk.
Frequently when I click on a file I get the message "Windows cannot open this file because it doesn't know what program created it." What the lleh does that mean?
Catty Mad ********************************************************* 03-08-04, 08:39 PM Bazcaz Hi Dwight , Farang glad it worked....nice to have success now and again! ********************************************************* 03-08-04, 11:55 PM Dwight Catty, I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about. But in general, once you download a program file, you have to open it and install the program. Once installed, the program generally has a shortcut in your start menu.
In general, program files are stored in:
C:\Program Files
Access the Program Files folder by opening "My Computer", then the C:\ drive, then the Program Files folder.
Dwight ********************************************************* 03-09-04, 08:28 AM cattywampus That's ok, Dwight, because half the time I don't know what you're talking about, either! Wink
I have been having so many problems with my computer I can hardly work, so I'll put it down to that. Having my disk wiped in the next few days, maybe that will help.
Catty Frown ********************************************************* 03-09-04, 10:51 AM farang Catty It didn't go on my pc. It just fixed it in a split second and went back into cyberspace. At least I can't find it anywhere. ********************************************************* 03-09-04, 03:53 PM cattywampus Well what do you know. I guess it must have fixed mine, too, because I'm not having half the trouble I was having. Only the other half.
Thanks, Farang!
Catty Razz
