Back in the days when this was a concern to me, kids, if drafted, went into the Army. If they were willing to volunteer for some other service, and were accepted, they could thereby avoid the draft, so, in effect, the draft was a recruiting service for any service perceived as more attractive than the Army.
I sent my own son into the Coast Gaurd because, ever since the Viet Nam war, I've been suspicious of the US government. I was evidently right to be suspicious, but it didn't help. He's on his way home from the Gulf right now.
