What kind of arrangements does Japan have with the United States where a military is concerned? Does Japan even have a standing military or is it strictly by U.S. defense services?
The US has been selling AEGIS destroyers and technology for a long time now. I once participated in an international naval exercise in Pearl Harbor (RIMPAC 2000). Japan brought 6 destroyers. It was like de ja vous seeing our ships with their national flag on the fantail! They didn't even bother to paint the hulls a different color!
Anyway, that just about makes the Japanese navy the best in Asia. They are also extrememly efficient.

The Japanese Army, Navy and Air Force are not called those things but are rather comprised of what is called the Japanese Self Defense Forces. Because Japan's Constitution does not allow any overt aggressive acts they are only allowed to maintain forces that permit self defense. There are several treaties that the US has with Japan that would act as a trigger for the US to come to their aid should the need arise.
