In a way, but a positive one. The local naval base, now that it ducked the axe, is poised to actually expand. How much of an effect this will have on the local economy is questionable, but it helps my lab because we collaborate with them on occasion and we get what they consider outdated equipment from them.

Fairchild Air Force Base, 60 miles from me, will be only marginally affected. It does face the possible loss of 8 KC-135 tankers from the Washington Air National Guard's 141st Air Refueling Wing and the loss of 198 civilian and military jobs. However, since the Guard unit is technically under control of the governor, many Congressional leaders say the Federal government can't legally order the change of the Guard unit. That technicality remains to be seen.

The only base on the list close to me is Onizuka AFB. I'm a little surprised, because there aren't a lot of places equipped to pull down signals from intelligence satellites which is all that happens at the "Blue Cube." In any case, it will have very little impact locally, as there are no important number of people employed there, and military people don't really make enough to live around here, so the few that are there might almost as well be continuously confined to the base.

I know this question was posted a while ago but Yes my husbands base is on the list.W K. Kellogg in Battle Creek MI.He will not lose his job for say..they have to offer him another government job.He works as a civilian by the way.We have the A-10 planes here and they will be moving to the other side of the state near Detroit if it closes. So there is a chance he could go there which would be great. But there will more than likely be some forced retirements the ppl who have been there 35 yrs and that to make room for jobs but I dont believe from what I have heard anyone will lose a job.
