Call this a Multi way question Ok
worth debate I know a partial answer yet I dont Know what the Official answer is
The question arises from Prince Harry being sent in to Battle .but They say he Has to serve 12 months to qualify for a campaign (tour)Medal But of course he'd get one if a battle Justified the Issue
So My question is How much "time" qualifies an individual for a service gong?

My Nephew is In and out of Afganistan as a specialist seconded to other regiments so he accrues the Time Last I heard he was at Fort Bastion which is I think a Major supply depot so He as far as I know Not on Combat duty

Not much on Google bar this Article
Does not sound like a place you'd spend your vacation at Mad

If you medals are like ours, I think he would qualify for the medal after a year of service in a non combat role in Iraq, but if engaged in combat, he would qualify right away, no matter how long he has been in Iraq.

The US Iraqi campaign metal.
quote:
The Iraq Campaign Medal is a military decoration of the United States armed forces which was created by Executive Order 13363 of President George W. Bush on May 28, 2004. A similar medal, known as the Afghanistan Campaign Medal was authorized for service during the same period within the borders of Afghanistan. The Iraq Campaign Medal was designed by the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry.

The Iraq Campaign Medal became available for general distribution in June of 2005. The decoration is awarded to any member of the U.S. military who has performed duty within the borders of Iraq (or its territorial waters) for a period of thirty consecutive days or sixty non-consecutive days. The medal is retroactive to March 19, 2003 and is active until a date to be determined. The Iraq Campaign Medal will most likely be issued until at least the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Personnel who have been engaged in combat with an enemy force, or personnel who have been wounded in combat or wounded as a result of a terrorist attack within Iraq, may receive the Iraq Campaign Medal regardless of the number of days spent within the country. The medal is also awarded posthumously to any service member who dies in the line of duty within Iraq, including from non-combat injuries such as accidents and mishaps.

On that link you posted there is this piece of Trivia...
quote:

During World War II, nearly 500,000 Purple Heart medals were manufactured in anticipation of the casualties resulting from the abandoned invasion of Japan, Operation Downfall. As of 2005, all the American military casualties of the following sixty years - including the Korean and Vietnam Wars - have not exhausted that stockpile

Wonder if Dubya is trying to run down the stock with all the current campaigns?
