Every high ranking military officer in uniform sports a large number of battle bars (those colored bars on their left chest). My question is how do they get all of these. Most are too young to have been in WW11. I'm interested in how they are obtained.

Not all bars are battle bars. Some of the metals include good conduct, humanitarian, heroism or outstanding service. All military branches have different ribbons. Some even get a ribbon for completing basic training or being a recruiter.
