Thanks Teecee, I have always wondered that... given that we won, I'd recalled that Lee won most the engagements... it seems Grant won the crucial ones.

Battle of the Wilderness (Virginia), May 5-7, 1864
101,895 Yanks, against 61,025 Good ol' boys
Casulties, 17,666 Union 7,750 Southern
The winner in inconclusive.

Battle of Spotsylvania (Virginia) May 8-19, 1864
83,000 Yanks, against 50,000 Rebs.
Casulties, 18,399 Union 9000 Southern
