I am doing a history project on popular music during different time periods and I had a few questions about groups.
Do you know when John Lennon's Imagine came out? How about the other Beatle songs? 60s? 70s? How about the Hustle? Shake Your Groove Thing? Elvis was the 50s right? Do you have any suggestions for songs from the 00s, 10s, 20s, 30s, 40s, or any other time period? |

Hi Sarah,
John Lennons Album "Imagine" came out in 1971 and the title track became a hit in the States straight away although it wasn't in the UK until some time after. Almost all the Beatles music came out in 60's they had their first hit "Love Me Do" in 1962 and their last "Let It Be" in 1970. "The Hustle" by Van McCoy & the Soul City Symphony and "Shake Your Groove Thing" by Peaches and Herb were from the 70's. Yes Elvis was in the 50's,but he also had hits thoughout the 60's and 70's until his death in 1977. I'll have to think of some music from the other periods and get back to you. Viv. |

OK....
One of the most popular music forms in the 1900's especially in the States was Ragtime, the most known writer of this type of music was Scott Joplin 1868-1917,and his "Mapleleaf Rag" and "The Entertainer" are probably the most known Ragtime tunes. The 1920's was the "Jazz Age",I would look at the music of Bessie Smith,Al Jolsen. The 1930's was the Swing era, "It Don't Mean A Thing, If It Ain't Got That Swing" by Duke Ellington "Stompin' at the Savoy" by Benny Goodman (The King of Swing),but in the U.S. there was The Great Depression and in Europe a war so songs often seemed to reflect the times such as "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" "We Sure Got Hard Times" or try to take people thoughts away from hard times "We're in the Money" ,"With Plenty of Money and You (Oh! Baby What I Couldn't Do)", "Happy Days Are Here Again" "There's a New Day Coming" The 1940's was the Big Band era,and the music of Glenn Miller was the sound of the time, songs such as "Moonlight Seranade" "Chattanooga Choo Choo" "String of Pearls" "Tuxedo Junction" Also music by The Andrews Sisters "Don't sit Under the Apple Tree","Rum and Coca Cola"and Bing Crosby "Swingin' on a Star" Remember that music blended in from one decade to another so you'll find Ragtime in the 1910's and Big Band music in the 30's but I think I have put the music in the decades where it was most prominent. I hope this was of help. Viv. |
