Hi, many times I go to the library and check out videos or rent them at the store. Seeing as we have a variety of tastes in this family ranging from War movies to Disney movies I would like to know what movies y'all would recommend. Just looking for different ideas. Thanks for your help. ++++++++++ 06-05-02, 07:17 PM billmasters There are only a couple of movies that I've watched twenty times or more, and though I don't think I could handle watching either of them one more time, any movie that you've watched twenty times or more has to qualify as your all time favorite.
Number two favorite: Forrest Gump - because I really liked the character and thought that Tom Hanks was Amazing in that movie.
Number one favorite: Braveheart - because the acting was great, the action kept me in suspense and it taught a lot about history.
06-05-02, 07:16 PM Excalibur will always entice me into another watching - an excellent, though compressing, look into the Arthurian legends. Would have many more to list, especially older "greats" but you asked for one!
06-05-02, 07:25 PM PerfectPeach I agree with Bill.. Forest Gump is quite the movie wink
06-05-02, 08:21 PM ArCHimeDes It depends on the mood I am in, but several movies are among the list of my all time favorites.
Shawshank Redemption Good Will Hunting Gladiator Dr. Zhivago Saving Private Ryan
06-05-02, 08:46 PM Good Ol' Boy 14 Although I agree Forrest gump was excellent, I'm gonna have to go with the original Back To The Future (wow am I a dork.) I don't know what it is, but I can watch that movie over and over and never get tired of it. I've seen it hundreds of times and still notice subtle things hidden in it. (Sad huh?) Same with the first 2 Die Hards. BTF 2 and 3 have less rewatch value, and while I liked Die Hard with a Vengeance, it just doesn't make me want to watch it repeatedly like the first 2.
06-05-02, 09:11 PM billmasters Good Ol' Boy, I have to agree with you on that one. Back to the future is deffinitely a movie that I've watched 20+ times. I didn't even think about it, but it was on TV the other day and I watched it again. Deffinitely better than Forrest Gump.
I like 2 and 3 just as much as the original. I remember all of the hype when part 2 was in the thearter. A lot of people don't know that part two and part three were fillmed simultaniesly. At the time, it was the first movie to have two sequalls fillmed at the same time. I don't know if there have been any since then.

06-06-02, 03:43 PM teeceeum There re two movies that I've seen dozens of times and will tune into again the next time I see them coming up on cable.
Pulp Fiction No way you can get it all in just one viewing. Too many stories. Too much happening. Probably Travolta's best.
The Shawshank Redemption There's gotta be a reason it's on so many others' list.
06-06-02, 07:31 PM WiteoutKing Faves: Monty Python and the Holy Grail Monty Python and the Meaning of Life Caddyshack (Note I did not mention Caddyshack 2, bad movie) The Naked Gun: Files from Police Squad Naked Gun 2 1/2 Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult Airplane! Airplane! 2 The Scorpion King The Mummy The Mummy Returns
And, even though I'm not a raging fan, Episode I: The Phantom Menace Episode II: Attack of the Clones Episode IV: A New Hope Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
06-06-02, 08:29 PM gizmogram The only thing I would mention about some of the wonderful suggestions here - she mentioned "family" - some of the recommended films, as much as I loved them, wouldn't be suitable for younger kids. I wouldn't want a 5-yr old to see Braveheart for example, because of the graphic battle scenes.
If you check out a movie that might in any way be inappropriate for the kids, depending on their ages, you might want to preview it first to make sure it's within the realm of acceptable viewing in your household.
By the way, Braveheart is one of my fav's too, but an all time fav is "The King & I" with Yul Brenner - a classic for all ages!
06-07-02, 06:21 AM nerdqueendeluxe Blazing Saddles for sure as you mentioned family. The inuendos went over the heads of the 10 year olds but they had a blast rewinding it over and over the watch a guy fart in the campfire scene.
06-07-02, 08:10 AM Chicabird MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL!!!
The Matrix
Dracula 2000
Tombstone
Shreck- not really a favorite, but i just love the gingerbread man scene...
Mr. Holland's Opus (slow but i'm a band geek)
Man in the Iron Mask
Braveheart
Gladiator
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
WOW...i guess Shreck is the only really "KIDS" movie up there...the others would do too i guess.
06-07-02, 08:58 AM teeceeum I'm afraind the "family" part just slipped past me when I answered. My picks certainly are not family entertainment.
06-07-02, 11:32 AM clarebear Fried Green Tomatoes... TOWANDA!

06-08-02, 09:23 AM Fourbrick Favorite All Time Movie Nobody has mentioned the greatest comedy of the lot--- "Some like it hot" starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Delicious !
06-08-02, 11:07 PM esencia My fav. is the drama 'Dead Poets Society' with Robin Williams & a slew of other great actors. I also like 'The Firm' 'The Secret of My Success' 'Back to the Future 2' 'Titanic' (`99 version ) 'Mannequin' 'A Few Good Men' 'Overboard' 'Aplooe13' 'Schindler's List'
There are many more. I remember one day many years ago (when I had nothing better too do) I watched Overboard over & over & over like 6 times in a row. I never got tired of it. I could also watch The Secret of My Success over & over...The others I can watch several times a week...pathetic huh? roll eyes ha ha But I would deffinatly reccommend Dead Poets Society. It does have a tear jerkeing bit in it about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way in but still...anyways, Happy Watching!! cool
06-09-02, 02:46 AM mahal Kelsey Gramar plays a great roll in "The Pentagon Wars"! I've seen it about 5 times or so and I laugh until I hurt every time! It's based on a true story, and whether you live in the US and love it or live outside the US and hate it, this is a great flick! It's hard to get though. It's a little old and not very popular. (I think these are called "sleepers"?)
06-10-02, 02:27 PM coldfuse Ben-Hur Patton The Outlaw Josey Wales The Shawshank Redemption Gone With the Wind North By Northwest Jeremiah Johnson The Sting Braveheart Life Is Beautiful
I also have a passion for nutty foreign films (foreign, that is, if you're from the USA). My favorites in the past couple of years are:
The Dish Best In Show East Is East Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels Waking Ned Devine

Cheers....Mel.
06-13-02, 11:36 PM gizmogram Although we're still talking movies that are suitable for younger kids, I want to thank the "Blazing Saddles" post! My 1st husband and I had to have seen that movie at least 20 times at the drive-in over the course of the summer! Got to where if we went to a slasher film (which I hated) & I could see the other screen, I could quote the dialogue as it went along! Will always be one of my fav's, and I agree that most of the adult humor would go right over the heads of younger kids.
Dogspit, I loved your list, but again, most of those movies would be inappropriate for young viewers. (note, I have most of these on video!)
Just saw Shrek for the first time this last weekend and just loved it!
It gets easier as the kids get older, but we still have to be careful! I was absolutely shocked that my daughter (13) rented and saw Road Trip before I saw it. When I DID see it, although I'm no prude, I was thoroughly disgusted with the fact that my 13 year old had seen this and understood it! I tore the convenience store manager a new one for allowing her to rent it - turns our the version they had was NR, so they could rent it to anyone. At that point I gave the store instructions that she was to rent nothing less than GP, and no unrated movies!
06-14-02, 09:37 AM puppyblues Okay, you asked for all time favorite movie, so I'm just giving one!
Sling Blade
oh blatz, I can't stop there St. Elmo's Fire Poltergiest ET Oh, I forget the name of this, it's got Ang. Jolie, Billie Bob Thorton and it's about air traffic controllers.............it must not have been that good if I can't remember the name!!!
Breakfast Club Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom The Shining Pet Cemetary The Green Mile Titanic Thelma & Louise It's a Wonderful Life Oh so many more...............................
06-21-02, 07:50 AM JennX My all time favorite movie is Fight Club, but my other favorites include: Original Sin Memento Scream Ten Things I Hate About You Wild Things Where the Heart is Nurse Betty I'll do Anything Grand Canyon Aliens Terminator Xmen Hellraiser 2: Hellbound Nightmare on Elm Street Jurassic Park Tomb Raider Bridget Jones' Diary Back to the Future An Affair to Remember Firestarter Heathers Save The Last Dance Clueless Party Girl
06-27-02, 05:30 PM Ritzmar Because I never tire of it I suppose "The Sting" is my favourite movie. I love "Scent of a Woman" with Al Pacino (awesome actor) and "Shawshank Redemption". Have a soft spot for Mel Brookes, so "Blazing Saddles" is in there, as is "History of the World" (very underrated). Must admit I prefer comedies to almost anything... if it makes me laugh, it works! big grin
06-29-02, 07:16 PM aminator2002 Cinema Paradiso is my favorite movie of all time.
I watch The American President more than any other movie though. It is a nice little movie.
06-29-02, 09:07 PM nerdqueendeluxe I recently saw it for the first time on DVD. Spring foreward or back up to Chapter 5, 18 min, 20 seconds and catch the multitude of looks on Nic Cage's face as he drives and tries to keep from cracking up over the backseat behavior. I never caught that on the video.
06-29-02, 09:59 PM newnickname Cyrano de Bergerac
Princess Mononoke
Dark Star
Life of Brian
The Blues Brothers
Dumbo
Apocalypse Now
Delicatessen
Shrek
Birds of Prey
Braveheart? Why does Braveheart keep turning up on 'favourite movie' lists? It is full of cliched, macho, anachronistic nonsense. There's nothing original or interesting in the movie-making. The story would have embarrassed Walter Scott in its puerility. The movie ignores the idea that people living at that time simply did not think like people now.
'Freedom', 'nation', 'war' were all different then. That much is a truism, but some good movies were made in spite of it - in the forties and fifties, in good fun, with Errol Flynn in tights, for example.
Braveheart has the pretence of realism, with its rain, and mud, and slick cinematography. But that doesn't sit well with its predictable, adolescent plot. Braveheart has the technology of the nineties, but the heart of something old and contemptible.
It's a bad movie, made to be watched once, on a big screen, very loud.
06-30-02, 01:27 PM cattywampus My favorites:
The Godfather Series Rat Race Out of Africa Willow Lord of the Rings big grin big grin
06-30-02, 10:10 PM Shadows and Dust The Man Who Would Be King Ben-Hur Gladiator Gone with the Wind Indiana Jones Trilogy Star Wars (original three) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring The Lion King American Graffiti The Road to El Dorado The Great Escape Red River Pearl Harbor/Harbour Rebel Without a Cause Rudy The Quiet Man The Magnificent Seven......
07-10-02, 02:15 AM Oceangurl I have to agree that I love Forrest Gump and never get tired of seeing it. Another of my other favorites is Simon Burch. I own both on video and watch each at least two to three times a year -- (kind of like my version of comfort food :-)
My favorite of all time, that I never tire of and have seen countless times is "Lonesome Dove" the 8-hour mini-series starring a great cast, but namely Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall. I fell madly in love with Captain Augustus McCrae -- he is the ultimate man -- a gentleman, a prankster, and a hero!
07-16-02, 03:15 PM mattlynda for family entertainment my FAV movie is the princess bride. the last unicorn is good too just not for really young kids... it IS animated but not americanized cartoony. but i have memorized that movie since i was a kid. the book is really good too
07-16-02, 05:52 PM Ritzmar -It's on TV in the UK at this moment...I ADORE Capricorn 1. I'd forgotten "Shawshank Redemption"-thanks, guys; also love "The Man Who Would Be King" and "Blazing Saddles". PS Does anyone but me like the "Carry On" films? My dear wife deserts me and goes to bed as soon as I start falling about with mirth at the God-awful puns & double-entendres scattered so tastelessly about...am I a lost cause...??????
08-20-02, 03:22 PM Jane Doe Favorite All Time Movie I read the other responses. Actually, Debra did not say she was looking for family oriented movies. She basically just said she has a family and they watch movies. With that said, my favorite movie is Amadeus. I never thought about classical music until I saw that movie. I was toally mesmerized. I've watched it many times. The other movie I like so much--I'm almost embarrassed to say it--is Arthur. Even thinking about the conversation between Arthur and Susan makes me laugh.
08-20-02, 11:07 PM Johnny Velo My two favorites ever were "Mister Roberts" "Hard Days Night" I have to admit I saw these two movies about six times each. Oh, I forgot one more "My Fair Lady" Can't make a list without that one. smile smile smile smile smile

Dune
Alien
2001
Autumn Sonata
King and I 'fities
Blazing Saddles
The Producers
08-21-02, 01:22 PM niccincoogol The Bicycle Thief - it's Italian, old, and it's one of the greatest movies ever made.
Seven Samurai - Kurosawa's classic starring Mifune. Great old-school samurai stuff with a fantastic story line. Inspiration for American "The Magnificent Seven".
Run Lola Run - German, non-stop action piece. Unlike any movie you've ever seen, and a recent instant classic.
The Dinner Game - French, absolutely hilarious, and goes overboard big time. Great story. Another recent instant classic.
08-21-02, 03:44 PM Ritzmar -Don't know the films you list (no time to watch many movies) but will check out one or two of the ones you list. My favoutite foreign movies are "Un Homme et Une Femme"; and "Onibaba"- totally different! wink
09-09-02, 08:45 AM niccincoogol Ritzmar - hey, few of my fave British flix-
The Man in the White Suit - for all those filmfans that only know Sir Alec as Obi Wan Kenobi, an absolute early classic.
Georgy Girl - cutesy yes, but a bittersweet classic, Redgrave is wonderful
09-14-02, 01:52 AM Abish Although I agree with most of the movie choices that have been mentioned, I would have to say my favorite movie at the moment is definetly Lord of the Rings. I thought this movie was excellently done and is a wonderful story.
10-31-02, 07:49 PM jusork I can’t think of many great or horrible movies (most movies are bearable, ok, or good) so I’ll just recommend some: Pitch Black, Orange County, Chocolat, Braveheart, The Last Castle, Rat Race (bad name and advertising creator should be fired but underrated movie). Life. The ‘Burbs. With Honors. Operation Dumbo Drop. Pleasantville. No Man’s Land (foreign). eXistenZ (pronounced: eg - ziz - tense; about 4 or 5 twists at the end). Robin Hood: Men In Tights. The Jerk. Lost and Found. Hart’s War. Waking Ned Devine. Novocaine. Dumb and Dumber (it may be silly but it’s silliness is done with originality).
11-01-02, 08:58 AM Texan-In-Exile Airplane I & II Loaded Weapon big grin These movies are just downright funny - PLUS - There's so much going on in the backgrounds, I see something new every time I see them!
Also - Hocus Pocus big grin
I also love classic horror movies like - Dracula (1931) Frankenstein (1931) Nosferatu (1922) The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1918) The Phantom of the Opera (1927) And of course, the original Night of the Living Dead (1968) eek
I really LOVE silent movies - the people really had to ACT to get the story across!
11-02-02, 10:26 AM sonnet26 In no particular order:
Old Yeller The Wizard of OZ Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory White Christmas 101 Dalmations
There's more, I'll stop now. LOL
11-03-02, 02:22 PM honilov My favorite movies are, and There a lot I like, but I never get tired of watching these two.
