The American Film Institute is about to announce its newest list of great moments in U.S. film history -- the 100 greatest songs ever sung in movies.
"AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Songs: America's Greatest Music in the Movies" is the organization's seventh survey of outstanding examples of American film. It will air Tuesday as a three-hour TV special on CBS hosted by John Travolta -- the star of "Grease" and "Saturday Night Fever."
"The finalists have been selected from 400 nominated songs on a ballot that was distributed last year to a jury of 1,500 -- mostly made up of filmmakers, critics and historians. The song that comes in at No. 1 will go down as the "AFI Song of the Century."
"AFI judges were asked to evaluate songs based on how they helped get a story told, as well as their overall cultural impact. The AFI urged judges to select songs that "have captured the nation's heart, echoed beyond the walls of a movie theater, and ultimately, stand in our collective memory for the film itself."

What songs do you think belong on the list? What about #1?

To each, his own. I will remember Alex de Large's version of "Singin in the Rain" better than Gene Kelly's version. But that's just me.

Great thread, bringing so many great memories! Karrow, your Life of Brian selection put a huge smile on my face.

I am reminded that several movies - like "The Sound of Music" - provide numerous exceptional prospects. Even my selection from "The Graduate" is less celebrated than its companion in the film, Scarborough Fair.

Music plays such a major role in how we experience and remember the events of our lives!

DG, know what you mean. I remember Judy Garland's version of "Singing in the Rain" and like it better than Gene Kelly. And speaking of Judy Garland...my number one song was the number one song! Smile

I wondered if anyone would notice that one, Fuse! It isn't a "classic", but it is on my list because I like it - and it always makes me smile. Big Grin

The American Film Institute's List - 100 Years, 100 Songs
#79) Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) ????

Nothing from "The Blues Brothers"???

Well, at least they got "Born to Be Wild" from "Easy Rider" (#29), "The Theme from SHaft" (#38), and "Puttin On the Ritz" from "Young Frankenstein" (#89). "I'm Easy" (#81) was also a nice addition.

Which songs do you think do not belong on the list?
Which songs do you think the AFI missed the boat on?
