Philip K Dick is a very underrated author, perhaps because he chose to wrote in the science fiction genre. Any of his novels are worth a look.

Some of the best science fiction books contain much that is true, and only a limited number of 'what ifs'.

I liked Asimov's Foundation trilogy, later tetrology.

I like Piers Anthony, there are many details in some of his series. I also like JRR Tolkien, naturally, because of his spiritual foundations. I have read some Heinlein, but read the big stuff first. Arthur C. Clarke is good, the Rama series is excellent. Stick with long books from good authors and you will not go wrong.

The novella made from the movie "The Abyss" is surprisingly quite excellent. Orson Scott Card -who NEVER writes movie-novels- did a fantastic job. The book delves into the past of the main characters as well, giving you a better feeling of where they're coming from. It makes the movie itself better, if you've read this book.

Orson Scott-Card is an amazing author. I also love the writing of Elisabeth Moon and Anne McCaffrey. Philip K Dick is also terrific... I really liked "The Galactic Pot Healer" and "Ubick". There are some seriously talented authors out there.

Le Guin's The Dispossessed is a wonderful, thought-provoking book. I'm on my second copy (wore out the first from constant rereading). But I haven't been able to get into anything else she's written.
I like anything by Larry Niven, David Brin, Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein (except for his last couple, where he was just recycling old material).

Ursula K.'s "The Lathe of Heaven" is pretty cool, too.

But look for a novel called "Replay" (by Ken Grimwood) if you want a really good/fun read. It's about a guy who gets to a certain point in his life, then is snapped back in time and gets to re-live his life with full memories of his previous actions. Over and over again.

Philip K Dick is a terrific author. He isone of the older unknowns among younger readers, but well known movies (think Blade Runner based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep") were based on some of his novels.

I really like his work, creative but often quite dark.

I loved the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman. Some people also know it as "The Golden Compass trilogy" too.

He is an amazing writer. The story is told very well, and the characters have great depth.

For me- the trilogy gets 5 stars.

I wasn't thinking of books written for children, but more adult fare, like The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness, an acknowledged classic. She's a fine writer with a great imagination.

Catty (besides she lives in the Pac. NW)

Another author I like, Michael Moorcock, especially the first story in The Majipoor Chronicles, about a woman who falls in love with an alien. Perfectly realized! big grin
