What race finishes about a 100yds beyond "The Elbow"?

Bonus point if you can tell us the purpose of the Elbow?

The Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree. Are you sure it's only 100 yards from the winning post? It always seems a lot more when your horse is leading ! It's only there to bring the field back on to the main course in front of the stands and to the post. If it wasn't there the poor things would have to jump the water jump again !

I've been a few times usually watch from Bechers ,Canal turn , or Valentines
My first Grand National was the year Oxo won (1959) and It was frosty or it had snowed Out of season? And we watched from the Melling Road crossing

I was 4 years old Ah diddums !

It must be a bit over a furlong. The run in from the last fence to the winning post is officially stated as 494 yards. The Elbow is near enough halfway.
