I think you are referring to Roy Campanella, although I doubt he would be considered "obscure" (especially if you are a NY baseball fan).

Close, but no cigar. This teammate of Jackie Robinson also appeared in the 1947 World Series (Campanella's first Series was 1949), and had two firsts of his own: He was the first black pitcher in the major leagues and was the first black player to hit a home run in his first at-bat in the major leagues (And, no, it wasn't Don Newcombe, either Smile)

My error; how about Dan Bankhead? Dan also was the first black player to hit a home run in his first at bat.
