Looks like Soccer is hot nowadays. Who holds the all time record goals scored in one world cup finals tournament? Should be easy for our friends across the pond.

It's a French bloke, isn't it? At least he wasn't a German.
You should be aware that the English have no hatred for other peoples except at soccer World Cups when they are always anti-German Big Grin. They go to the matches wearing plastic WW2 British battle helmets and carrying inflatable toy Spitfire fighter 'planes and so on. They chant things like

"Two World Wars and one World Cup !
We won, we won!"

just to tease.[ Second reference is to England v Germany in the 1966 World Cup Final ]

And the scorer was Juste Fontaine, I think, back in the '50s.

Big Grin Just too funny Fred! And you are right about Just Fontaine. It was in 1958 against Sweden, he scored 13 goals. Good job!

It could be both ways.It happened "in" Sweden, but he scored those goals "against" the team of Sweden.

He can't posibly have scored 13 goals against anybody even in a club match, never mind an international one Big Grin

Further to the above: To give you non-soccer people a clue: the highest score by a whole team in an international game played by England was 13 goals to nil in 1882. I can't quickly find the absolute record for all international games by all teams. Suffice it to say I can't remember any individual player scoring more than four goals in a match at top club level. It's soccer we are talking about not basketball !

From the site above :

At the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden, Fontaine scored in all six games, notching an unprecedented 13 goals.

So it has to be in Sweden and not against Sweden.

I remember that it was a russian player back in 1994 or 1990 scored 4 goals against Cameroon ( i think - roger miller team) and that was an indivdual world record in a world cup.

I dont get your point Bik74.

How do you explain ,then, this headline?
http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/060617/2/klgo.html

A team always scores "against" not "in".

Bik, and others, are saying that the goals are scored in a specific country, the location of the game, but against only one opponent. Fontaine did, indeed, score 13 goals, but not against one other team in one game.

This sentence

At the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden, Fontaine scored in all six games, notching an unprecedented 13 goals.

gives the following information:

All the final games in the 1958 World Cup competition were played in Sweden.

Fontaine scored in all 6 of the games in which he played.

The total amount of goals he scored, in all 6 games, was 13.
